Since assistant Mary Weather is the person that gives equipment during an equipment check, and also reveals the second piece during a gallop (or schooling over fences), players sometimes get confused as to whether her comment is talking about the first piece or the second piece. I thought I’d spell out both her and Dr. Hacklu’s comments for equipment pieces, for each situation. There’s two possible equipment check comments for each piece.
NO EQUIPMENT
Equipment Check: Horse doesn’t have any behavioral problems so he doesn’t need any equipment.
BLINKERS
Equipment Check: Horse has trouble focusing and likes to look around. Maybe trying adding blinkers?
Equipment Check: Horse bears out on the turn, I’d add blinkers to keep him running straight.
Gallop: Horse is always looking around on the track. Blinkers would be a good solution.
EAR MUFFS
Equipment Check: Horse gets really worked up before the field even gets to the paddock. Maybe try ear muffs?
Equipment Check: Horse is terribly nervous. Ear muffs could settle him right down.
Gallop: Wow, horse seems really nervous with all this activity. Maybe try some ear muffs?
FIGURE-8
Equipment Check: Horse just likes to rocket out of the gate. Adding a figure-8 noseband might help him settle.
Equipment Check: The rider was complaining about horse this morning. A figure-8 should give your jockey more control.
Gallop: Your rider was telling me that horse is difficult to ride. Have you tried a figure 8 bridle?
FRONT BANDAGES
Equipment Check: Horse’s forelegs were pretty hot after that last gallop. To avoid injury, you should add bandages.
Equipment Check: Horse’s right foreleg is a bit swollen today. Bandages are in order.
Vet Check: Have you ever noticed that horse is sore in the morning? Maybe try some bandages. (NOTE: This comment might refer to hind bandages, instead of front bandages.)
HIND BANDAGES
Equipment Check: Horse has been running down behind. To avoid losing too much hair, you should add bandages.
Equipment Check: Horse is a little off behind. To avoid injury, you should add bandages.
Vet Check: Have you ever noticed that horse is sore in the morning? Maybe try some bandages. (NOTE: This comment might refer to front bandages, instead of hind bandages.)
LASIX
Equipment Check: I talked with Dr. Hacklu after he scoped horse, unfortunately it looks like you should definitely give a Lasix shot from now on.
Equipment Check: Horse has some blood and mucus in the lungs, so try using Lasix.
Vet Check: Just so you know, I scoped Sherry Sight today. You might want to start using Lasix.
NO WHIP
Equipment Check: Horse ducked out hard when the rider went to the left-hand stick. It’s too risky, you should probably lose the whip.
Equipment Check: Look at horse’s tail whipping around! That whip is really upsetting him. I’d get rid of it.
Gallop: By the way, I have a bone to pick with you. If you let the rider hit Falcon Eagle with the whip one more time, I quit!
SHADOW ROLL
Equipment Check: Horse is scared of his own shadow! Maybe a shadow roll would work?
Equipment Check: Horse runs with his head up high, I’d try a shadow roll.
Gallop: By the way, have you ever put a shadow roll on horse? That might help with focus on what's ahead, rather than shadows below.
TONGUE TIE
Equipment Check: Horse is a bit aggressive and is always fighting against the bit. I’d use a tongue tie.
Equipment Check: Horse has trouble breathing while galloping. Have you tried a tongue tie?
Vet Check: Oh! I remember you asking about horse's teeth because of discomfort with the bit. I checked the teeth, no issues there. A tongue tie might solve your problem with the bit.
