Re: Melbourne Spring Carnival Thread
I really like this edition. There’s at least 10 horses with real chances. Should be a wide open market.

My brain just exploded.Peter Gleason wrote: ↑3 years ago Remembered this thread out of the blue, felt the need to check it out.
Really looking forward to the cup this year, some real quality - Verry Eleegant, Russian Camelot, AVD, Sir Dragonet, Tiger Moth and the Baby
With Sydney expanding their carnival, there hasn’t been much depth in a lot of races, but this one should be exciting

Agreed so many chances this year.
Anthony Van Dyck was huge in the Caulfield Cup, sat 3 wide for most of the trip at the tail of the field and home in 11.75/11.57/12.01 but he has to give horses like Tiger Moth 6kgs weight difference here which equates to more than 6 lengths.
Verry Elleegant gets a 0.5 kg penalty for winning the Caulfield Cup which equates to roughly the distance between her and Anthony Van Dyck at the finish and she came out of gate 8 vs gate 21 for AVD.
It's been a while but Cox Plate winners have run "well" in the Cup, Saintly, Makybe Diva and So You Think come to mind so it will be very interesting to see how Sir Dragonet performs.
I loved the ground last years VIC Derby winner Warning made up in the Turnbull however he has had the dreaded hoof abscess (now burst) during the week and is undergoing daily vet checks.
4YO's have won the last three editions in Rekindling/Cross Counter and Vow and Declare carrying 51.5/51/52 respectively so read into that as you wish.
Always a great race being a handicap.

Steel Prince is in red hot form and only got beat 2 lengths last year. Geelong Cup traditionally a good lead up race too. Americain won it as his lead up if I recall right.
Prince of Arran is my heart pick with Jamie Kah in the saddle. Every female jockey in Australia will be cheering for the pair. But he’s been in excellent form and had excuses for being beaten so he’s not an insane pick like Prince of Penzance looked before his win.

Can't argue with Prince of Arran, only carrying .5kg more than when he ran 2nd last year, had the quickest last 200m in The Caulfield Cup (11.92) from last on the turn and spot on about Jamie Kah she has come such a long way after moving from the McEvoy stable in Adelaide where she was already a star.
