Purses A purse is the total amount a race is worth, such as the $3 million Louisville Derby being having a purse of $3 million.
Breakdown for winnings per race:
1st - 50%
2nd - 22%
3rd - 11%
4th - 7%
5th - 3%
Breeder Award 7%
Breeder Awards is a percentage of each purse that goes back to the breeder of the winning horse, regardless of whether or not the breeder still owns the horse or even plays the game.
Typical Purses
Grade 1 - $200,000 or more
Grade 2 - $150,000
Grade 3 - $100,000-$125,000
Listed Stakes - $50,000 - $75,000
Classified allowance - $30,000
Allowance/NW5/NW4/NW3/NW2 - Between $15,000 and $25,000
Claiming - Between $10,000 and $20,000
Maiden Special Weight - $25,000
