A Few Stepping Stones

Original article written by Shayna Cross posted 12 years 2 weeks ago

First of all, I would just like to Welcome all the New Players to the SIM, it’s quite exciting to see all of you, and I hope you enjoy this game as much as I do. Being new to this game is quite scary, I’ve been through it twice. First joined in 2009 and hung out for a few months, then disappeared for a long time. Came back late 2010, older, braver and somewhat smarter (High School does that to people, apparently.). Anyways, getting away from my sob story, let’s focus back on getting you, as a new player started in your new found love of the SIM. Below are just a few things you could and should do to get started.

1. Join the Forum, perhaps introduce yourself in the New Player thread, then read, read, read. Especially in the Help and FAQ thread. All the stuff posted there is info about the SIM, and different programs within. There is a topic there called “Paul Heinrich's Quick Start Guide to the SIM”, and contains some of the best advice out there. While you’re in that area of the forum, read over the other topics too, Theresa some in there about Equipment, Breeding, Buying/Selling, Racing, and numerous others that will really help you get a grasp on what the SIM is all about.

2. WAIT! Don’t leave the forum yet! There are other areas that will interest you too! Of course, don’t forget to read the Help for New Players area. In fact, be a regular visitor. Older players regularly post free and/or cheap horses there, contests, and links to New Player-only races there. It’s a great spot to get advice too. I would highly recommend applying for a mentor, they can really help you get started and help keep you on the right track as you get started.

You should try to visit the Contests area as well, players post games, giveaways and activities there that you can enjoy, and it’s a great way to get to know other players. Friends are an important aspect to the game, and can make this SIM even more enjoyable!

The forum is very active part of the SIM, try to visit on a regular basis. Visit all the different parts of the forum, you can never learn too much about the SIM’s horses, the players (ok, maybe you can learn much about the players…), and the other aspects that make the game work.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, whether on the Forum or just messaging someone that knows. The players here are all friendly and very willing to help. Don’t let your pride get in the way; we all have had questions or problems from time to time. Asking a question tends to save you money and embarrassment down the road!

4. The most important thing about this game is to HAVE FUN. If you’re not having fun, you’re missing the point of the SIM. Enjoy yourself, enjoy having a stable of horses to race, and enjoy making friends that love horses just as much as you do.

So, I will stop giving advice now, and I hope I haven’t scarred you with my writing skills. I wish you a ton of luck as a New Player! I hope you fall in love with this game!
