Steward’s Cup Classic Was a Day for the Ladies

The course was Fast and the skies were sunny for the Steward’s Cup Classic which was hosted by the Toronto Racecourse in Canada on Year 31 Week 16. It was a Grade 1 Stakes race for 3 year olds and up at 1 1/4 miles on Dirt, with a purse that was at a whopping $4,000,000. The race had a grand total of 10 runners.

However it was a day for the ladies as two came back with redemption on their minds after a disappointing second in the Classic last year.

A beautiful 5 year old dark bay superstar mare, Amber led the field wire to wire in her final start. Amber was ridden by Gail Sparks, owned and bred by Susie Raisher. Amber added $2,000,000 to her total lifetime earnings bringing the total to $4,746,000. Amber had 18 starts with 14 wins, 2 shows, and 2 places.

Alysse Peverell’s homebred 4 year old stallion Open At The Close also ran in his final start as he was retired following the Steward’s Cup. He was content to run third until the final call where he began to make his move only to come up ½ length short of Amber. Open At The Close earned $880,000 bringing his lifetime earnings to $5,586,000. The 5 year old had total of 15 starts with 8 wins, 4 places, and 2 shows.

Running in third was a son of the great mare Wonder. Jolene Danners 4 year old dark bay stallion Who I Am. He won $400,000 for his attempt which brought his total lifetime earnings to $1,520,000 with 14 starts 5 wins, 4 shows, and 2 places.

Spartan and Eric Nalbone came into this race looking to even the score with their close matched competitor Sword after running neck and neck in all of their races. The 3 year old chestnut earned $280,000 bringing his total lifetime earnings to $2,667,000 having 10 lifetime starts with 6 wins, 2 places, and 1 show, this being the only race he has ever placed off the board.

Laura Ferguson and her 3 year old gray colt Sword ran fifth earning $80,000 to add to his already hefty $2,900,000 in lifetime earnings. Sword has a total of 9 starts with 5 wins, 2 places, and 1 show, this being the only time that he has finished off the board as well.

The 3 year old dark bay son of Flames, Akon ran from 10th place to finish 6th. He has lifetime earnings of $1,370,000 with 10 starts 6 wins, 1 place, and 1 show.

Hold All Tickets a 3 year old bay colt owned by Jon Xett was running 5th until the third and final calls where he ended up placing 7th. He has $322,000 in lifetime earnings with 10 starts 4 wins, 3 places, and finishing off the board 3 times.

Norman Architecture’s 3 year old bay colt Bodega Head never got into any better than 6th place. He has lifetime earnings of $435,000 with 11 starts 4 wins, 3shows, and 1 show.

Expect the Best, a bay, owned by Keith Maidlow ended his 3 year old racing season with lifetime earnings of $691,000 and 10 lifetime starts winning 5 times, placing twice, and finishing off the board 3 times.

Kira Ravenwood’s 4 year old black gelding, Warn the Masses ended his season with lifetime earnings of $ 83,600 and his total career starts was 14 with 2 wins, 1 place, and 3 shows.
