Messiah Wins the Long Island Classic

In the Long Island Classic a bay colt with a stripe running from his forehead down to the tip of his muzzle moved from seventh to first to win by three lengths in the mile and a half race in the mud. The colt stands at 17 hands, his name is Messiah. Messiah is sired by Notorious and out of the California mare Significant. He is Significant’s lone millionaire and is her only colt to date. Here is the results:

First Place – Messiah (Notorious x Significant by California) – Owned by Stephen Skaggs and bred by The Steward Messiah has had a very good three year old season kicking it off with a win in week one in the grade 3 ‘End Result Stakes’. Following that win was a win in the grade 1 ‘Sunshine Park Derby’. His first loss of his career came in one of the biggest races, the grade 1 ‘Louisville Derby’ where he would finish third. He would finish third in his next race too, the grade 1 ‘Baltimore Crown’. He came back though in the third leg of the triple crown to win, defeating the Derby winner and the Crown winner in the grade 1 ‘Long Island Classic’. Messiah has a record of 8: 6-0-2 with earnings of $1,170,000. He is now the leading three year old in points and one of the eight three year old millionaires.

Second Place – Rising Stars (Highly Regarded x Simperior Edge by Dr. Richardson) – Owned by Ashley Gibson and bred by The Steward Rising Stars has had a descent three year old season that started with a win in the grade 3 ‘Giacomo Stakes’. Since then he hasn’t made it back into the winners circle but finished third in the grade 1 ‘Sunshine Park Derby’, a disappointing ninth in the grade 1 ‘Louisville Derby’ and now he is getting back on track with a second in this race. Rising Stars has a record of 7: 3-2-1 with earnings of $382,500.

Third Place – Championship Day (Chretiens x Steward’s Cup by Chinese Bandit) – Owned by John Slotmon and bred by The Steward Championship Day hasn’t been in the winner’s circle yet this year, but just finished third in the third leg of the triple crown. He started his three year old season with the first loss of his career in week two in the grade two ‘Fountain of Gold Stakes’ and the grade 1 ‘New Orleans Derby in week four, finishing second in both. In the grade one ‘Louisville Derby’ he finished fifteenth. He skipped the second leg and came back with a third in the third leg of the Triple Crown. He has a record of 7: 3-2-1 with earnings of $275,500.

Fourth Place – San Diego Padre (Father’s Day x San Diego Madre by California) – Owned and bred by Matt Wilson San Diego Padre has had an awesome three year old season. It started with a win in the ‘Sunshine Derby’. Following that win was a win in the grade 2 ‘Albuquerque Park Derby’ winning by four lengths. In the grade 1 ‘Louisville Derby’ San Diego Padre beat the odds to win by a half length making him the derby winner. Following the Derby win was a fourth in the grade 1 ‘Baltimore Crown’, ending his Triple Crown winner hopes. He came back in the ‘Long Island Classic’ looking for revenge but couldn’t, losing by over four lengths combined. San Diego Padre has a record of 8: 5-1-0 with earnings of $1,390,500.

Fifth Place – Fast (Big Gamble x Sensation by Five Circles) – Owned by Larry Burndorf and bred by The Steward Fast is the only horse in the field that skipped the Louisville Derby. He has had a descent three year old season that started in the grade one ‘Sunshine Park Derby’, he finished fourth. Following that was the grade 3 ‘Lexington Race Course Stakes’ where he captured his first victory of the year and his first since week 13 of last year. He was then entered in the grade one ‘Baltimore Crown’, despite a hard battle he couldn’t hold on, Fast finished eighth in the second leg. He came back from that eighth to finish fifth. Fast has a record of 8: 3-1-0 with earnings of $349,500.

Sixth Place – Night Fury (Boise x Favorite Girl by Chesapeake Bay) – Owned and bred by Laura Ferguson Night Fury was one of the favorites coming into the Triple Crown, being the Steward’s Cup Juvenile winner he had a lot to live up to. He started his three year old season with a win in the grade two ‘Buccaneer Derby’. He was then put into the first leg of the Triple Crown, he finished a disappointing sixth. Following his worst finish of his career, in the second leg of the Triple Crown he finished second, just a half length behind the winner. The third leg was a repeat of the first, he got sixth. Night Fury has a record of 7: 3-2-0 with earnings of $1,465,000 making him the richest three year old in the SIM.

Seventh Place – Stay Inside (Sun Raider x Wonder by Five Circles) – Owned by Emily Mitchell and bred by The Steward Stay Inside is the last colt from the super mare Wonder. He had a lot to live up to coming in to the Triple Crown. His sire is the sire of Triple Crown winner Maelstrom and his dam is the dam of Triple Crown winner Awake As I Am. His three year old season started on a high note winning both the grade two ‘Fountain of Gold Stakes’ and the grade 1 ‘New Orleans Derby’. His Triple Crown hopes where ended in the first leg, he finished second. In the second leg he did even worse, his worst finish to date, a ninth. This seventh is his second worst finish to date. Stay Inside has a record of 8: 4-2-0 with earnings of $805,800.

Eighth Place – Gunnarr (Axel x Everlasting Love by Saga) – Owned and bred by Emily Mitchell Gunnarr was yet another favorite for the Triple Crown. His three year old season started with a wins in the grade 3 ‘Tremendous Stakes’, and the grade one ‘Kentucky Blue Stakes’. He finished seventh in the ‘Louisville Derby’ ending his Triple Crown hopes. In the second leg however, Gunnarr played spoiler, spoiling San Diego Padre’s Triple Crown hopes by winning the second leg of the Triple Crown. In the third leg Gunnarr finished the worst of his career with an eighth.

Ninth Place – The Birthright (The Awakening x Right For You by Righteous) – Owned and bred by Bill Outsilver The Birthright has had a more than disappointing Triple Crown. He started well in the preps winning the grade 3 ‘Rising Star Stakes’, but from there it was downhill. He finished third in the grade one ‘Kentucky Blue Stakes’ and a very disappointing fourteenth in the Louisville Derby. He skipped the Baltimore Crown but couldn’t capitalize on the field to challenge. The Birthright has a record of 8: 3-0-1 with earnings of $157,500.
