A Crown Awaits Passes at 21
Original article written by Lily Wilks posted 11 years 1 week agoHall Of Fame stallion, A Crown Awaits, died of natural causes due to old age on August 28th, 2012. He was a ripe 21 years of age.
I think it’s safe to say that we will all remember him. He was one of the most prominent turf-route breeding stallions in the SIM; producing 120 stakes winners out of 531 offspring. His offspring earned a combined total of $74,442,570 racing… a staggering amount of money.
A Crown Awaits did not come from humble beginnings – he had the breeding of a champion, with superstar race mare, Change The Stars as his dam, and Storm Cat son, Three Of Crowns, as his sire. I’m sure everyone in the colt’s inner-circle knew he was special from day one.
Prior to his sensational breeding career, he had an exhilarating racing career. He was as game as a horse could be, running undefeated! Fourteen starts, fourteen wins. His major wins included the Canadian Breeders Stakes, The Steward’s Cup Turf Mile, the Desert Sheema Classic, and the Japan Cup. He ran (and won) anywhere from 5 furlongs, to 2 ½ miles. What a versatile horse! He retired with earnings of $4,282,200. He turned out to be his dam’s best.
As a stallion, he saw some incredibly classy mares – Kizzer, and Fiji Nights just to name a couple. Thirteen of his stakes winning offspring ended up being millionaires. Popular stallions Red White And Blue and Knighted are sons of his.
The death of a horse such as A Crown Awaits brings great sadness to the SIM community, but it was a wonderful thing that we were all blessed with a horse like him. He has left his mark on the turf horse breeding/racing industry. His youngest offspring are currently ten, so some of them are still breeding and passing on his legacy.
