Braveheart Recovering From Surgery

Original article written by The Steward posted 16 years 3 weeks ago

Louisville Derby winner Braveheart is recovering from surgery the morning after his dramatic victory in the Run for the Roses. The three-year-old son of Oak Park is at an equine hospital in New York, and then will spend the next seven weeks at Dare to Dream Stud. Eric Nalbone, the colt's owner, was upbeat and optimistic the morning after.

"I'm just glad he's going to be okay, and I'll decide whether or not to retire him later. There is a chance he could come back as a four year old," Nalbone explained. The trainer is conflicted over whether or not to retire his star, because he stands Braveheart's sire and his brother, Saga, as well. At the same time, he doesn't want to risk the colt suffering another injury.

Braveheart's roses hang outside of his stall door at Dare to Dream stud, waiting for the colt to return. The handsome red chestnut was "eating well" and "alert" according to Dr. Hinede Hacklu, the veterinarian on call.
