Hall of Fame: Sword and Shield

Original article written by Avery Genna posted 4 years 0 weeks ago

Sword and Shield was a Steward bred mare by champion Sun Raider out of Hall of Famer Cadeauje, by Sports Jersey.

She was campaigned by Callie Anderson and had a race record of 13: 8-2-2 with $1,021,500 in earnings. Sword and Shield broke her maiden at first asking, then ran second in the Temple Stakes in her next start. Her third and final start as a two year old was the G1 Trap Stakes, where she finished third.

She won her three year old debut, a Non Win 2 lifetime, then became a graded stakes winner by taking the G1 Lexington Oaks. She then won the G2 Inglewood Oaks before running in the G1 Midsummer Oaks, finishing a half length behind winner All Sleep Well. She then ran in the Steward’s Cup Distaff but was a disappointing sixth.

She came back with a vengeance as a four year old, winning her first start of the season, the G2 Rampage Handicap, by two lengths. Three weeks later she won the G1 Set Them Free Handicap. Sword and Shield was on a roll, winning the G2 Trap Stakes and the G1 Rags to Riches Handicap. She finished out her career with a respectable third in the Steward’s Cup Distaff.

Although she enjoyed a moderately successful racing career, Sword and Shield really left her mark as a broodmare: out of her 14 foals, every single one was a stakes winner! A true blue hen mare, here are her offspring, who gathered over $26 million in race earnings:

1. Impress, a stallion by Awake As I Am. Her first foal, Impress earned nearly $2 million on the track, and was a multiple Grade 1 winner.

2. Sword and Staff, a mare by East. An earner of over $840,000, her best win was the G1 Rags to Riches Handicap, the same race her dam won! Ironically, besides being a multiple graded stakes winner, she also ran second in the G1 Midsummer Oaks to All Is Well, the daughter of All Sleep Well - the same mare who beat Sword and Shield in the Midsummer Oaks. Sword and Staff was also a successful broodmare, with several graded stakes winners and over $1 million in progeny earnings.

3. Wind Against Fire, a stallion by Flames. An earner of $2.5 million, he won multiple G1 races, and was a successful sire with $23 million in progeny earnings. He sired Y38 Baltimore Crown winner, Fugazi, who won in a dead heat, and G1 New Orleans Derby winner Harbinger of Doom.

4. Harry Potter, a stallion by The Awakening. Harry Potter was wildly successful, earning over $8 million, and four Simmy awards, two of which were Horse of the Year.
