Original article written by Avery Genna posted 4 years 1 week ago

Distillery is a Quarter Horse stallion bred and owned by Laura Ferguson. Sired by Makers Mark, he is out of the Goldmine mare Barbee’sfirstgold. He made his debut as a two year old, winning a maiden special weight, then won the Rainstorm Futurity Trials just two weeks later. Two weeks after that, he ran in the Grade 1 Rainstorm Futurity, finishing a game second to Silver Mark, only missing the win by a neck. He then ran second by a head in the Most American Futurity Trials, going on to win the G1 Most American Futurity just two weeks after that.

Distillery was given a three week break until the Grade 1 California Juvenile, and didn’t disappoint, taking the win by a neck. His final race as a two year old was the G1 Steward’s Cup Quarters Juvenile, which he won by three fourths of a length to notch himself the Simmy Award for Y37 Quarter Horse Champion Two Year Old Male.

He didn’t race again until week 5 of his three year old year, winning the Rainstorm Derby Trial. He then finished second by a nose to Gold Man Facter in the G1 Rainstorm Derby. Distillery rebounded with a win in the Most American Derby Trials, then went on to beat Gold Man Facter in the G1 Most American Derby. Three weeks later he won the Grade 1 Star of Stars Stakes as his final prep for the G1 Steward’s Cup Quarters Championship.

Distillery closed out his career with a victory in the Steward’s Cup, earning himself two more Simmy Awards: Y38 Quarter Horse Champion Three Year Old Male and Y38 Quarter Horse of the Year. He retired with a race record of 13: 10-3-0, never finishing worse than second in his career. As a sire, he has over $60 million in progeny earnings, siring horses such as Nacogdoches County, who won three Simmy Awards and is also a successful sire, the mare Bourbon Heritage who earned three Simmy Awards, Y43 Champion Quarter Horse Three Year Old Male Spirits, and Y43 Paint Champion Two Year Old Male, Canadian Rye. Distillery was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Year 52.
