Hall of Fame - Adventure

Original article written by Nathan Klein posted 3 years 3 weeks ago

Adventure was definitely a precocious filly on the track but as a broodmare, she became one of the greatest broodmares in the SIM. Her breeding was top notch as well. She was by Braveheart who on the track won the Louisville Derby before having his career cut short due to a forelimb fracture. He was still able to carry on his legacy with such champions as Stewards Cup Ladies Route winner Valiantly. Adventure's dam was Baby a horse who went on to win Broodmare of the Year thanks to producing Canadian Triple Crown winner West. So it was a bit of a surprise when her 2-year-old-season started a bit slow.

In her first start, she broke outwards and was tucked in slightly but simply had no kick in her for the finish line and finished a very well-beaten fourth. However, things did get better for her in her next start as she was able to pick up speed at the half a mile pole. Her and Dreaming In Style made turned it into a match race as Adventure chased her down and went on to win by 1 length. She repeats the performance in her only stakes performance as a 2-year-old when she won under a mild drive in the Grade 3 Canadian Juvenile Fillies. It was a good clear sign she was a stakes tier horse and that next year she would have many new places to go.

She would run in the Silver Bullets Stakes next out as one of two preps toward the Louisville Oaks. At the start, Adventure fell to dead last of 10 horses and slowly accelerated by half a mile. With only one-quarter of a mile to go she was in ninth place with Arras I and Thrown A Wheel leading the pack. But with an explosive turn of foot Adventure made the last quarter of a mile count running the most impressively out of anyone else in the field. Zooming past 6 horses and quickly making her way into third place. She then made up the extra length to try and reach Arras I but just couldn't make it finishing third a quarter of a length behind Arras I and 3/4 of a length behind Thrown A Wheel.

Her next start would be halfway across the world and her first grade 1. She would go to Dessert Oasis Park and run in the Dessert Oaks. Just like before she was clear behind the leader as Lingerie would open up a nearly 5 length lead at its longest. Just like before she slowly began accelerating but with a final quarter of a mile she made up the 5 lengths between her and Lingerie to get up by 3/4 of a length. It was a good sign she was ready to run in the Louisville Oaks. The stage was set the best 3-year-old fillies racing together. How would Adventure fair amongst them well she finished twelfth out of 12 runners. She simply did not have any rally it was just like her debut except on a big stage.

She would get back to her form somewhat in the grade 2 Trap Stakes next out. She would again start her slow acceleration mid-stretch and slowly pass everyone but there was a deeper closer in the race. Dessert Wild was dead last and quickly was passing everyone as well. The two runners lead the pack in the stretch with Adventure's lead weakening fast she for once was the one needing the finish line. Luckily she did get it managing to win by a quarter of a length.

Her last major dud would come in the Midsummer Oaks as she was unable to get any further than fifth place throughout and simply flattened out. She simply was not good at navigating through big fields of horses. So she ran in the Lady's Choice Stakes next. It was a small field of 4 other opponents. Just like in the Trap Stakes she would have to hold off deeper closers late game. She slowly moved past the front runner Battle the Best but in the final 1/8 of a mile, Kopiko flew late to pass Battle the Best and come only half a length short of Adventure.

It would be her last victory as she would finish the year and her career with a distant second-place finish in the Wonder Stakes. Overall she finished with 10 starts 5 wins 1 second and 1 third. A solid career to be sure but not anything hall of fame worthy. Until she went into the breeding barn. Both of her parents were successful earning over 15 million in progeny earnings each. However, Adventure was able to outdo both of her parents. With all of her progeny winning at least one stakes race and over $100,000. This also included 8 millionaires which included Dessert World Cup winner Voldemort and Stewards Cup Classic winner Paramount.
