Hall of Fame - Seven Day Theory

Original article written by Nathan Klein posted 3 years 1 week ago

Year 23 was a very major year for SIM racing at it would start the history of many different breeds of racing horses. It was the year Quarter horses, Paints, and Appaloosas ran. But it was the year of the Pacers and Trotters, that year would have Igetmoney as the first big champion of the Pacers going on to win the first-ever Simmy for Standardbred Pacer Horse of the Year. But there was already next year's champ ready to sprout that year as well. His name was Seven Day Theory.

At age 2 Seven Day Theory only raced 3 times but that was enough for him to become the first-ever Standardbred Pacer Champion Two-Year-Old Male. His first win was by far the most impressive looking as he managed his easiest win running away with the race to win by 5 1/4 lengths. Things were not so easy next time out as he stayed right with the leaders and swung 4 wide into the far turn of the race. It would not be enough as he just missed out losing to On The Money by a quarter of a length. It would be his first of 2 defeats in his career. Although his first stakes attempt was unsuccessful his grade 1 debut gave a better result as he managed to cruise home to win by over 2 1/4 lengths. With such an impressive win over the best 2-year-old Standardbreds in America he won the award easily.

His 3-year-old season would last way longer and give him most of his big highlights. He would make his season debut in the New Jersey Stallion Series. Letting Chauncey lead early with him right on his neck early. the two fought throughout the race with Seven Day Theory slowly but surely moving past. On the outside regular rival Treks would come late with the 3 a quarter of a length apart. With all his might Seven Day Theory held off challengers inside and outside to just hang on. His wins in the Northern Hampshire Cup and Meadowfields pace were way more commanding as he led the races from start to finish and setting himself as the favorite to win the Niatross Pace the first jewel in the Standardbred Pacer Triple Crown.

In the first jewel it was simple he gunned for the lead with Chauncey and beat him to it. After that he would slowly open up as the late closing Arthur's Niatross would come home late. Despite a late surge from Arthur's Niatross Seven Day Theory was simply in control the whole time holding off all comers. The second jewel the Western Dreamer Pace went the same way initially with him out fighting Chauncey to have the lead however, a wide post position meant everything. As he took the turns too widely causing him to lose to much ground. Meanwhile Arthur's Niatross had a ground-saving trip skimming the rail and getting up by a quarter of a length. Despite giving it all he had the wide turns ended up costing Seven Day Theory the Triple Crown.

However, it did little to break his stride for the third jewel the Big Blue Bucket Stakes handily the turns more constantly despite an even wider draw. He was ready this time Arthur's Nitross didn't have the same luck as last time struggling through the turns and flying late to only get second. Seven Day Theory simply had too much heart on a normal day he could run fast with the leaders and then have enough left to hold off the closers. He never was well defeated he finished fighting.

All that was left was his final race the Stewards Cup Classic Pace. At the break Chauncey got the slight edge managing to lead the race early. Even with this slight disadvantage, early Seven Day Theory chased after him. Seven Day Theory would take the lead by the first quarter of the race. But for once Chauncey regained his lead. By half a mile the two locked heads running in unison neither giving an inch until the final quarter. There Chauncey gave way and Seven Day Theory burst into the lead with a clear 1 length margin.

Flying late Treks and Arthur's Niatross closed the gap coming home late to try and catch a tired Seven Day Theory. But despite fighting Chauncey longer than usual he still had more to give just holding off Arthur's Niatross to get the win. After that he had nothing else to prove and he retired getting 2 Simmy's for Pacer Champion Three Year Old and Pacer Horse of the Year. As a stud he was not able to pass on his genes as most would hope despite over 2 million in progeny earnings he only had a few stakes winners and only 3 progeny to break 6 figures. Even with a less than stellar stud career Seven Day Theory was still a champ on the racetrack who would fight the leaders head-on and still have enough to hold off the closers. No matter what he fought and fought hard never losing by less then a quarter of a length if you could even beat him at all.
