Hall of Fame - Where Am I

Original article written by Nathan Klein posted 3 years 1 week ago

Nar was one of the first Arabian sprinters ever and left his mark as a champion. As a stud, he continued to leave a mark as he has fathered two Hall Of Famers. The more popular one is Qairan but there is also the beautiful flaxen Arabian known as Where Am I.

She had an almost golden coat and a nice slim head and stripe in the center. She was also fast, with a great early speed that could take her to the front and never let it go. That is what her rivals would soon learn when she broke her maiden gate to wire.

A start later she ran in a Non-winner of 2 again being on the lead. She gave it up in the first half by just a quarter of a length but rebounded in the far turn and went on to win by a quarter of a length in a surprise rebound. 3 weeks later she added a non-winner of 4 to make her streak 3 for 3. But it doesn't take a Hall Of Famer to be able to dominate these kinds of races. The real question was would things change when she raced against stakes company. They were about to find out as she got ready for the Arabian Route Stakes.

She broke quickly but proved a step slower than her front running contemporaries. She was third by just two heads in the first section. But as they went into the far turn she fell back to fourth still battling the speedy front runners and at that moment losing. But in the stretch, she found her second wind as she slowly moved into contention and at the wire got up with a thrilling head victory. But next time out she was the one to lose by a head as Milaia defeated her in the Gasp For Air Stakes. All that was left for that year was the definitive Steward's Cup Arabian Ladies Dash. The race that would put her on the map as a star.

Just like her other races, it was a battle for the lead. This time with a filly named Balerina who was a tough horse to shake off as they battled head and head the whole way around. But Where Am I had the extra heart and just as her previous 2 races settled it with a margin of a head. This time it was in her favor and she got her first-ever Grade 1 win. It would also give her a Simmy for Arabian Champion Three Year Old Female.

As she returned for another year of running she came back strong with a 1 and 3/4 length victory in the Northern Warrior Stakes. But she had to go back to fighting hard for victories in the Grade 3 Shorter The Better Stakes. Which was fitting as only a head separated her and her opponent from victory as she won the race. But in the latter half of the year, she started to lose some of her edge. She gave it her all but she won only 1 of her next 3 races. The others were heartbreakers as she was second both times by just a nose.

Lastly, there was her second run in the Steward's Cup Arabian Ladies Dash. Which proved to be an embarrassing finale. She was held midpack instead of chasing the leaders. It wasn't her fit as she didn't make up any extra ground and simply faded to dead last. Even with such an anti-climax to her career she still was awarded a second Simmy for Arabian Champion Older Female. As a broodmare, she proved decent as well managing two stakes winners including a Grade 1 winner in Sanctuary Blues. In total, her progeny earned her $538,270. By the end of it, the only question that remained was where is Where Am I. And the answer is, in the Hall Of Fame.
