Hall of Fame - Wait A Minute

Original article written by Nathan Klein posted 2 years 3 weeks ago

One of the first celebutantes of sim racing started racing in just the second year of the sim. Her name was Wait a Minute but her story had to wait until 56 sim years later to be told. Wait a Minute was a well-bred mare raced and bred by Marie Matthews one of the first stars of the sim although she doesn't play anymore. She started her success in the sim with Manistique who gave her, her very first win and Grade 1 victory in just one start the Southern California Oaks. But now she had her next champion Wait a Minute. Which she had not a moment to waste.

It took her three races to finally break her maiden although she was game in defeat finishing second in both her defeats. Then just a start after her maiden victory things escalated quickly as she won the $350,000 Matron Stakes. It was another win for her as she now jumped from being a maiden to a stakes winner in two starts. She only would have one more start that year in the Steward's Cup Juvenile Fillies where she finished third to Hall Of Famer Foreigner. But now that she was established at the stakes level her three-year-old year was more opportunistic for her. First she took the Fantasy Stakes which was a typical win but she then went against males in her next start the Southern California Derby.

Where she went on to defeat Be Holy Bull. But Be Holy Bull got her back in the Louisville Derby when she finished fourth and he finished second. Tilt A Whirl would go on to beat both of them. She only had one more loss in the Acorn Stakes. But she came through at the end of the year with wins in the Inglewood Oaks and another victory against the boys in the Malibu Beach Stakes. She only was continuing to improve and perfect her abilities as a racehorse as she began to run at the age of four in year four.

She continued to add to her success against the boys on the west coast with wins in the San Fernando Stakes and the Strub Stakes And then winning the Manistique Handicap. A nice tribute to her owner's first champion. She then wrapped it up with her two biggest victories. First, she took the Inglewood Gold Cup, and while she lost the Long Island Gold Cup to Tilt A Whirl she finished her career with a win in the Steward's Cup Distaff against Foreigner and future Steward's Cup Classic winner Three Day Event. With that, she retired and went on to the breeding shed where she became just as major as she was on the track. But as the last hurrah, she claimed her first Simmy Award at the age of four with North American Champion Older Female. In the shed, she had progeny earnings of $11,307,960 with most of it coming from her major breadwinner Chinese Bandit who won the Desert World Cup. So while it was overdue I've finally given a minute to Wait a Minute and her story as a racehorse.
