A Peek into Famous SIM Names: Interview with Andrew James

Original article written by Emily Mitchell posted 2 years 2 weeks ago

I recently asked a few owners of famous horses with interesting names about how they came up with those names. I think names offer a unique peek into each owner, and finding the “why” has always been interesting to me. I also asked about any regrettable past names, exciting future ones, and any up and coming stars these players have to showcase for us.

So let’s get started!

Interview with Andrew James:

“Dassem Ultor - he is named after one of my favorite fantasy characters from a series called Malazan Book of the Fallen. His sire Vengeance or Grief is from the same series, it is a sword. Dassem picks up the sword and chooses vengeance :)

I have TONS of horses I’ve used "special" names on that haven't worked out. When I was newer, I used a lot of my favorite names (normally fantasy books or characters) on very suspect horses. I’d love to be able to go back and not have done so on a few, thankfully most have been bad enough I’m able to release the name.

As far as up and coming horses, I leased a mare from Danny Derby and it’s the only foal I have created this year. I named her Kickstarter as both Danny and I have a shared interest in the author Brandon Sanderson. Sanderson recently just ran a Kickstarter for his upcoming books that is the most successful Kickstarter in history. Plus it sounds cool!

Lastly, I’ll just add I’ve got four really special names saved (Cleo, Jimmy, Olly and Stan) named after the four pet cats I’ve ever had. I’m saving them in the hope I one time get a mare who throws freak after freak!”

You see this is exactly what I mean! The name means so much, and if you’re like me you just didn’t know. BUT guess what… I just ordered Book 1 of the series Andrew mentioned. In 2 days I’ll be getting new reading material! And I do already buy everything Brandon Sanderson writes, so, will be getting anything he can churn out (lol).

My thanks to Andrew for his time, and please check Feature Race again soon for the next article and interview!
