Bear’s Pearl

On Year 44, Week 12, Day 1 a special grey filly was born to A Fooling Dream and sired by At the Gallows End. She was regally bred, and her performance stood up to everyone’s expectations. Named Bear’s Pearl by her lifelong owner Joseph Depaulo, she was the seventh of ten foals out of A Fooling Dream. All ten foals were money earners and with total money winnings of $6,683,770. At the Gallows End was an outstanding roan All Weather sprint horse with $1,021,450 in track winnings with 15 wins, eight seconds, and three thirds out of thirty races. His offspring totally won over $53,496,475 in winnings. Who would have known that this All-Weather Champion sprinting horse would be followed in his footsteps by his daughter and granddaughter? Bear’s Pearl was his number one winning offspring with winnings of $1,389,500.

Bear’s Pearl first outing was an All-weather Grade 3 stakes which she easily won in a field of nine. This trend was continued during her next four two-year-old stake races. On Year 46, Week 16, Day 1, Bear’s Pearl won the Steward’s Cup Synthetic Filly Dash two-year-old stakes with a purse of $200,000. Additionally, she was named Y 46 two-year-old Champion All Weather filly.

Her three-year-old year did not have the long stretch of wins but included 3 stake wins and two seconds respectively. She repeated her winning of a Steward Cup Synthetic Speed three-year-old race and was named the three-year-old Champion All weather Filly.

Her fourth year of racing was some up and downs in placing with two of the constant competitors Pit and Fissure owned by Kasie Gillespie and Overcast Morning owned by Randall Allen. Pit and Fissure was Bear’s Pearl half-sister and the second highest money winning offspring of At the Gallows End. Bear’s Pearl had 1 win, three seconds, and one third leading up to her final showdown race in the Steward Cup Synthetic Speed Stakes three-year-old and up race. An intense three-way race occurred with first place going to Bear’s Pearl, Pit and Fissure in second and Overcast Morning in third. Bear’s Pearl was the All-Weather Older Female Horse of the Year.

After her many winnings on the track, she changed to her next career as a broodmare. She was bred 11 times with 4 winners. Gem of Woodbine, sired by Calgary Cat, was her biggest winner on the track with $1,890,020 in winnings. Following her mother’s hoofprints, she was two-year-old All Weather Champion Sprinter, Three-year-old All Weather Champion Sprinter, and Older Female All Weather Champion Sprinter. I found it interesting that three of Gem of Woodbine’s foals sold between two to three million dollars as yearlings at sales. Another one sold for over $800,000. But it looks like there will not another one to follow in the legend of winning multiple year end awards.

Bear’s Pearl has pensioned with her constant friend and companion goat, The Guardian, where they quietly roam the pastures reliving the past wins and exciting times. This great mare was owned by her loyal breeder, Joseph Depaulo throughout her career. Look at the history and pedigree of this pretty and legendary mare. She is a horse that everyone dreams of breeding and owning one day.
