Newbie Q & A - Part II

Original article written by Jillian Eaton posted 15 years 4 weeks ago

Tuesday saw the first installment of my question and answers series geared specifically towards newer players. All of the answers to these questions can be found throughout the SIM, but hopefully having them all in one place will be more helpful for those looking for a quick answer. Remember, if you have a question that hasn't been answered you can send me a private message and I will be more than happy to address it in the next segment. In case you missed it, my first article can be found here: http://www.simhorseracing.com/featurerace/article.php?ArticleID=2506

Q - HOW MANY HORSES CAN I OWN?
A - There is no limit to the number of horses you can own. Some people have thirty, others have over 700. If you are a new player still getting used to the game I would suggest not having more horses than you can easily look after.

Q - HOW OFTEN DOES THE SIM GIVE ME MONEY?
A - You recieve $100,000 automatically when you start the game. You will not recieve any more 'free' money from the SIM after that.

Q - CAN I HAVE MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS?
A - The answer to this is NO! You should never have more then one account.

Q - WHAT DO I DO IF I'M RUNNING LOW ON MONEY?
A - The SIM can be difficult to play if you don't have lots of money. There are ways to get more cash without winning races, however. If you write an article for the Feature Race you can earn money. You can also make money selling horses. I would suggest never letting your bank get below $30,000.

Q - HOW DO I SELL A HORSE?
A - You can sell any one of your horses by clicking on your horse's name, deciding on a price you want to sell them for and pressing Modify Sales Price. If you are selling your horse for less than $10,000 and you want it to be available only to newbies you can click the new player sales page button.

Q - HOW DO I SELECT A PRICE FOR MY HORSE?
A - This depends largely on what your horse has done and what it's bloodlines are. If you buy a horse and race it successfully a few times then you can probably sell it for more then you paid. Look around the sales page and see what similar horses are being sold for. Sometimes if you're running low on money its better to get rid of the horse for something then hold on to it for nothing.

Q - SHOULD I GELD MY HORSE?
A - Once again this depends largely on your horse. Nine times out of ten a colt will perform better once he has been gelded and you now receive $1,000 for gelding your horse! Unless you have a colt who you know will earn upwards of a million dollars and has great bloodlines, I would suggest you geld. It can't hurt the horse's chances at racing and may definitely help.

Q - CAN I RENAME MY HORSE?
A - Thanks to a new feature recently put in by the Steward, you can now rename any horse that hasn't yet raced for a fee of $5,000.

Q - HELP! MY HORSE CAN'T SEEM TO WIN ANYTHING.
A - This is a problem that has plagued many a trainer. Before you throw in the towel take a long look at the horse that is giving you trouble. Are you running it at the correct distance (see the next question to discover how to select the right distance)? Does it have the right equipment on? Is it racing above it's ability? If you're really stuck you can always ask for help on the Forum.

Q - HOW DO I KNOW WHAT DISTANCE TO RUN MY HORSE?
A - A great indication of how short or long your horse prefers to run can be found through it's parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. If both the dam and the sire are routers (horses that like to run long) then your horse will probably do best at races more than a mile. If the parents are sprinters, then your horse will probably like the short distances (7 furlongs or less). Sometimes you have a dam who is a sprinter and a sire who is a router - then it's up to you to play around with the distance and see what your horse prefers. If your horse is running at a distance that they don't like then they won't win.

That's it for this segment! Hopefully you found a few tips here and there. Remember that the forum is a GREAT place to find helpful answers and suggestions, as well as to meet both new and veteran players. Part III will answer some of the following questions:

- What do I do if my horse gets injured?
- How do I claim a horse?
- When should I start breeding?
