Oh what a way to bring the year to an end. An exciting race and thrilling race call by The Steward concluded this year’s Steward Cup events with the running of The Steward’s Cup Classic. No one seemed to mind the bad weather and sloppy race conditions as some of the finest thoroughbreds in the game lined up to compete in this premier classic. The race, a Grade 1 for three year olds and up, going 1 ¼ miles with a purse value of $4,000,000 went off at the Toronto Racecourse in Canada.

The winner was Then, a five year old dark bay horse by End Result, out of Now, by Blades Hill. Bred by The Steward, owned by LaDonna King and ridden by Ava Fox. Then rated well mid pack for most of the race, made a strong move late and proved strongest at the end. His final time for the 1 ¼ miles was 1:59.20 with a speed figure of 85. He concludes this year’s campaign with three victories in four starts, all at this distance. His lifetime race record is now 19:12-4-1 with earnings of $4,244,100.

Second place went to Born The Best, a four year old grey colt by Giacomo, out of Lokite Talent, by Sports Jersey. He is owned by Gerrie Hardie, was bred by The Steward and was ridden by Oliver Brunetto. Born The Best ran a good race, had a decent trip but was just no match for the winner today. His lifetime race record is 15:9-4-0 with earnings of $2,871,400.

The third place finisher was Something Better, a three year old dark bay colt by End of the Line, out of Cadeauje, by Sports Jersey. Something Better is owned by Dave Shields, was bred by The Steward and was ridden by Colin O’Neill. Something Better also had a good trip, ran extremely well at the end but did not have enough to overtake the top two. His lifetime race record is 9:6-0-1 with earnings of $989,250.

Fourth place went to Temple, a four year old black filly, by Throne, out of Architect, by Fighting With Wit. He is owned and bred by Ali LaDuke and was ridden by Cadence Black. Beaten by just a neck for third, Temple ran a very game race. His lifetime race record is 13:9-1-1 with earnings of $1,505,500.

In fifth place was Chretiens, a four year old black colt by Five Circles, out of Minuit, by Conduit. Chreitiens is owned by Ronnie Dee, was bred by The Steward and was ridden by Renee Russo.
