Hall of Fame - Tiara

Original article written by Jolene Danner posted 14 years 0 weeks ago

A good broodmare is worth her weight in gold, possibly even uranium! No one knows that better than Alysse Jacobs owner and breeder of Hall of Fame entrant Tiara. Tiara has added wealth and depth to Jacobs stable not just in the shed after her career, but she began long before her first foal hit the ground, on the racetrack.

A massive, 17 hand, grey filly, Tiara hit the track running year 14. Taking a Maiden Special Weight in her first start by 6 1/2 lengths. A huge margin for a 5 furlong contest. Her second start was the only blemish on her racing record. However it was an effort of a champion. She lost by a head to the daughter of Rain Dancer, Coast, in the grade 1 Spinaway. In her third outting she rebounded and never looked back. She won the grade 1 Matron stakes by 2 1/2 and wheeled back to take down the Stewards Cup Juvenile as well. She completed her juvenile season with a 4-3-1-0 record. The head loss cost her being named North American 2 Year Old Filly of the year, Look Stars, went home with that honor.

Jacobs was now eyeing the Louisville Oaks, so Tiara made her Year 15 debut in the grade 1 Ashland. She won easily by 2 1/2 over La Sorciere and Mint to Be. Ready as ever for her big day, Tiara entered the Louisville Oaks as the heavy favorite. She didn't disappoint, only 6 others even dared to try her. She again won by 2 1/2 making La Sorciere taste second place once more. In her next start Jacobs decided to test her distance ability, stretching Tiara out to 10 furlongs in the grade 1 Alabama. Tiara handled the test without issue, drawing off to win by 3 1/2 lengths. Dropping back in distance she next took down the grade 1 Ruffian in her final prep for a repeat in the Stewards Cup. Tiara entered the Distaff field having never lost during her 3 year old campaign while still dancing all the big dances. Eight others lined up to try to take down the big filly. No one was successful, Tiara would complete her 3 year old season undefeated while taking down the Louisville Oaks and the Stewards Cup Distaff. Only tasting defeat once in her life to the hands of Coast as a Two Year old. She would not be slighted in the eyes of the SIMMY voters this time, Tiara was name North American Champion Three Year Old Filly.

Jacobs made the decision to add Tiara to her broodmare band after that victory. Tiara had done enough in her 2 years on the track and she was anxious to produce a foal. Her first foal, by the great Conduit, was named Majesty. He went on to make 2.2 million on the track while winning 4 grade 1 races. In the shed he is holding his own with over 60% winners and over 10% stakes winners. Her next foal was another colt, named Supreme. By the great Loki Dynasty, Supreme never seemed to quite put it together until Brianna McKenzie discovered too late that he was a miler. Tiara's first filly was by the derby winning colt Saga, named Superior. While not reaching the greatness that was achieved by her dam, Superior still went out on the track and took names. She earned over a half million and her own foals seem to be holding their own on the racetrack.

Born next was another filly, Countess, by End Result. A somewhat disappointing racer, earning just over 300k. Although she won five times including in grade 3 company. King was born next, a colt by Oak Park, a multiple grade 1 winner who earned over 1.3 million on the track. King's first runners hit the track year 25. The six year old stallion i still on the track running, by Chesapeake Bay, he was 2 lengths short of winning the Puerto Rican Triple Crown. With over 350k banked Regalis has been an overall disappointment after the narrow TC miss. The next year she threw another filly. This one named ornament by Tot Ziens. She was able to pick up two grade 1 wins and has a yearling by End of the Line on the gorund. Earning over 600k, ornament seemed to hold her own on the racetrack, but still couldn't reproduce her mothers ability.

Next up was the one, the one that was going to make Tiara a star in the shed. The one that Alysse Jacobs bred with one thing in mind. Winning the Louisville Derby. By super stallion, End of the Line, Buckingham was born for greatness. While a few of the races he's run in have been questionable, the horse did was he was meant to do. He won the Louisville Derby, with ease. Over a field of horses that were extremely competitive. Buckingham is still in training and looking to take more names as a four year old. The three year old, a full sister to Buckingham, Coronet, has yet to break her maiden in 3 tries. Tiara's two year old filly Karma by Fighter Jet, has a pair of three furlong works, and will be started when the races stretch out in year 25. The yearling is by Triple Crown champion, Awake As I Am, Diadem will hopefully dazzle everyone when she hits the track next year.

Tiara may be on her last legs as a broodmare, the thirteen year old has produced well, even if she hasn't been able to replicate herself completely. She was voted Broodmare Of the Year in Year 24, the year her son Buckingham took down the Derby. Jacobs is still waiting for that superstar filly to be born, she's got 2 in the wings waiting to give it their all. Tiara will always be the crown jewel of Jacobs stable and when she goes she will be sorely missed. However her legacy will live on through her sons, and hopefully for Alysse, her daughters as well.
