Newbie Tips-Filling your Stable

Original article written by Louise Bayou posted 14 years 2 weeks ago

Ok Newbies, I know that $100k looks so good in your bank account you want to just go out and buy, buy and buy! But wait and think carefully about what horses you put in your stable! My first piece of advise is to not buy horses for the first couple of days actually. The best thing you can do to prepare yourself for doing great in this game is to read anything and everything you can before you jump in and buy 25 5 year old maidens. Also join the chat room as much as possible and ask questions. Then after a few days, go and buy a few horses.

But my biggest advise to Newbie, as far as filling your stable is to go and look at the horses in claiming races. Claiming races are races that have a claiming price attached to each horse and for that amount you can buy them. The great thing about claiming races for Newbies is that you can tell how well the horse runs. You can also tell how far the horse likes to run, and what equipment seems to work best for him or her. These horses are already in race shape and on a schedule and all you have to do is click that little button and you have a horse that is ready to go.

Make sure you take a look at any horse you want buy and see how long they have been running. Have they run 15 times and still not won? Are they past their prime and only continuing to go down in performance? Really look at their race records and if you have studied how the Sim works you will be able to see if the horse is a good buy. Just look beyond the price, and find out if the horse is a good fit for you.

I would also advise against buying foal or yearlings when you first start. Dealing with foals and yearlings is a long process and take a lot of time to get to the track. I just don't think right when you enter is a good time. I know I made the mistake of buying yearlings and to be honest they were pretty horrible, because I didn't know enough of checking bloodlines and making sure that Sire matched up with that Dam. I bought yearlings that had a router Sire and a sprinter Dam, ones that has Sires that won like $150k, and mares that had not even broken their maidens (won a race) and had never produced even a decent runner.

And I know that a lot of Newbies really want to jump in to the breeding side of this game but I would suggest holding off for awhile. To be honest, there does not need to be any more maiden mares breed to $150k earning stallions. You can not breed until you have been on the Sim for 6 weeks, and I don't think that is enough time to learn about racing much less how the breeding game works. You will have plenty of time to breed, just relax and learn all you can about what produces the best foals and you will realize it was worth the wait.

So welcome to the game, and have fun. Also just ask questions, there are plenty of awesome people that play this game and would be glad to help answer any question you may have.
