Secrets for Newbies: My First Race Horse

Original article written by Clinton Jacinto posted 14 years 1 week ago

Stud Book?

I would suggest that for your very first venture in the SIM try to go to the horse rankings and look up the current best horses running at present time. Search for the active points leaders. I’m pretty sure that as a new player you are probably skeptical about getting Simperior at first. I know I was because I wasn’t sure if it was even a good investment (Well, it is a good investment, life saver at times especially with a big stable.) Anyways, without the SIMperior a new player does not have access to the stud book. This is when the horse rankings come in.

Access the horse rankings and study the sires that are producing great runners. Take notes of them. This will be your reference when you start looking for decent runners at the New Player Sales Page. I also would like for you to look and study some of the workout times. This will give you another dimension to sort out some of the faster working horses, but also remember that there are slow working horses that perform exceptional come race time and there are fast working horses that run like turtles come race day also. My advice would be in this case, which sometimes work and sometimes doesn’t, but would be a good tool for a starting newbie goes as follows.

Total Inspection

-Study the pedigree/breeding of the potential runner. Most horses have good sires, but always check if the sire is producing good consistent runners. More importantly look at the dam side. Study if she has been producing winners and consistent runners. Study also if the matching of the sire and dam works (i.e. dirt sprinter sire and dirt sprinter mare) if the distance and surface are not compatible to each other then I suggest don’t even bother with them, unless of course they are multi surface runners and that is another story in itself. It is hard to figure out who are the multi-surfaced sires without SIMperior unless you want to go through the progeny list one by one and list the surface they offspring ran on.

-Next up look at the workout times. Are they decent compared to runners in races in the SIM? To compare the workout times go to the forum and look for workout times and averages. There are a few threads that mentions average workout times. This thread right here is one of them. http://www.simhorseracing.com/simforum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12751

-In addition to the factors above. I also consider buying maiden runners that can win race in Trial Park. The most sought after race in TP are race 1 and 2. AKA Dare to Dram races. More info can be read in this thread at the forum. http://www.simhorseracing.com/simforum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14529 Also, try to look for horses that have been run by veteran players that have quit. Some of their horses are dispersed in the New Player Sales page. Some of these horses can be worth millions. Blue chip mares are also put in the New Player Sales page. For those who did their homework. These blue chip mares are easy to spot.

Now that you have gotten all these info you are ready to look for your first 5 horses.

In the next issue I will tell you about what to do next which will consist of mostly of entering races and know when your horse is ready to race or not.
