Something Wild Rocks the House

Original article written by Fanta Arcadia posted 12 years 2 weeks ago

It didn’t just rain for the Steward’s Cup Juvenile Turf, it came a torrential downpour as thousands in the stands gazed in wonder as Ode to the Skies turned for home with a healthy lead that would not last as the lone gelding of the field, Something Wild, roared passed Ode to the Skies and never looked back. Something Wild flew under the wire over a sopping wet turf course to win by three lengths in a time of 1:34.90.

Going into the gate, all eyes were on the two heavy favorites Ode to the Skies and Keys to the City. Both colts and the lone gelding were sporting perfect records coming into the Steward’s Cup Juvenile Turf, but only one would exit with that perfection still intact.

As soon as the gates sprang open, the race was on. Ode to the Skies busted loose and never looked back through the opening stages of the race. Keys to the City settled in fourth and Something Wild settled next to last in the field of eight. By the time they hit the backstretch, Ode to the Skies showed that he meant business with a seven length lead. As they swung into the stretch Ode to the Skies still held the front end and was pouring his heart out onto the track as Keys to the City was making a move. It looked for a while that none would catch Ode to the Skies until a blur of dark bay was soon spotted rocketing past his rivals in a furious rush. Angling up the center of the track, he passed by Keys to the City in a rush and soon had Ode to the Skies measure as he passed by him as if the colt were standing still. The rocking, sixteen hand gelding won going away by three. He also earned himself and eighty-seven speed figure and a $500,000 check. This win brought his record to a perfect four-for-four and his graded earnings to a total of $622,500.

His pedigree suggests that he is one promising gelding, and since he’s a gelding he will be around the track for quite a long time. Something Wild is a dark bay gelding with no visible markings, sired by The Wilding and out of the Sunday Silence mare Somethingsomething. Somethingsomething, herself, is out of the Affirmed mare, Affirmed’s Joy. The Wilding was sired by Le Dauphin Noir (sired by Conduit and out of Les Batons Magique) and is out of Sai Yah (sired by The Scarlet Nite and out of Shentaan).
Something Wild was bred in Kentucky and for the break will reside at the Kensington Stud Farm in Great Britain. It has been confirmed by his owner, breeder, and trainer Rose Hepburn that the gelding will be pointed toward the English Triple Crown of Year 31.

Meanwhile, Ode to the Skies (who finished a stunned second) is remaining at Lake Hamilton Stables for the break, and the third place finisher Keys to the City is residing at Lake Hamilton Stables as well.
