Remembering Nightmarch

Post by Kelly Haggerty »

Right now 4 of the top 10 3yo TR fillies have Nightmarch as either a sire or grandsire, including the amazing Malcontent. A 5th filly has Nightmarch's sire Kitasan Black as a grandsire as well. Nice family!

I like Night's Quiet more, correct me if I am wrong when over all genders he has similar or better influence.

Nighmarch has 18% stakes winners to Night's Quiet's 14% and $197k average per runner to Night's Quiet $100k. That said, it is hard to compare the two because Nightmarch had a high stud fee and saw fewer mares, most of which were pretty high quality given his fee. Night's Quiet has been more accessible, but probably has had his stats impacted as a result.

I have a deep appreciation for both stallions.
Night's Quiet gave me Roughian, Rumble of Thunder (who's sire was Nightmarch), Outlawed (full to Roughian) who was a stakes winner and now a blue hen mare.

Out of the same dam that foaled Roughian, (Fortitude) the stallion Nightmarch gave me Mal and Malcontent.
He also sired my millionaire mare Foretold who is a blue hen and as already foaled 2 freaks...Tuck Everlasting and the above mentioned Rumble of Thunder. She also has a 3rd foal by Night's Quiet, hopefully next season's gallops will give me another freak.
BTW...3 out of the top 5 Nightmarch runners belong to me. 8-) [Mal, Malcontent and Foretold]

I managed to send Roughian to Nightmarch twice before he was pensioned. Her 2 year old colt, Billy Jack is a stakes progressive and currently racing...the other is a yearling filly named, In The Air Tonight and she's also a stakes progressive.

There are some other Night's Quiet and Nightmarch offspring that I have, that earned more than $50,000 with many of the females ending up as formidable, star and blue hen mares.

I was so happy that Nightmarch was able to hang in there until after Roughian retired because I desperately wanted to pair her with him ...not only did he make it to her retirement, but stay in there until the next season, and I *think* he was 15 by then.
I think if Nightmarch had already pensioned by then, or had more safe years left in the stud barn.. I might have raced Roughian 1 more year to try to nail down that $10 million in earnings - she was so Very close to doing it with $9,425,500 under her belt.
