Separation of gallop and fitness

Post by Dave Trainer »

I'm a bit confused about this.

Can w now gallop any time for the gallop rating without worrying about injuring our horses?

e.g. Would it matter if we galloped a few days before the race?

Is jogging and/or swimming now the best way to get horses fit?

My understanding is that gallop is now back to the way it originally was - it's still the most tiring form of exercise (in terms of getting your horse fit), but it also lets you know the gallop rating of the horse (freak/stakes/allowance/etc). Jogging is another form of exercise that will help your horse get fit, but it also lets you know how fit the horse is (needs training/training well/etc). So, it does matter when you gallop a horse - ie., if you gallop a horse the day after it races, it may very well get injured.

Oh dear. I galloped all mine yesterday to find the gallop rating again. Does this mean they won't be able to race week 1 without getting injured?

I use to consider all of the break/preseason/every day leading up to week 1 day 1 as it doesn't exist. Thus everything you do during this period counts as an exercise you'd do during the last day of w.16 the previous year.

As a comparison, if you'd race your horses during w.2 when you had them galloped the last day of w.1, I would race them. Otherwise not. (It depends on race day, soundness, previous exercise, previous race schedule et cetera, so I'll leave the judgement to you. :) )

Horses do recover some during the week where training is open but races haven't started yet. In my experience if a horse was fully rested and then galloped right when training reopened by the time week 1 Monday comes around they will be fully rested again. However, it takes horses longer to recover if they have had a lot of cumulative stuff. So if you had a horse that raced week 16 and then was galloped once training reopened I wouldn't do anything with them for a bit to make sure they can recover. Of course, you shouldn't be racing those horses week 1 even if they hadn't galloped but if you were hoping to race then week 2 maybe vet 1 or 2 first just to make sure they have recovered.

Thanks Tammy. Those that raced early week 15 should be ok to race week 1 then if they are not unsound in any way?

Probably assuming they aren't shipping really far, but I would still probably vet at least one a day or two before the race just to double check.

I would not run any horse that you just galloped W1 Monday as they will break. Some that haven't raced in awhile may be okay W1 Friday but depends on their previous race schedule/soundness/etc.

Jogging gives the fitness comment.
