Do you believe in fate

Post by Ryan Whitehead »

Years back I leased an Appy Router blue hen mare named Throw Away the Old from Bob Green which I later purchased. This mare had a Steward Cup winner to her credit already, Particolour.

Well I ended up breeding my first freak filly, Betty Jo, which I named in honor of my mother who passed in a auto accident in 2007. Betty Jo ended up winning the SC at age 2. She amassed over 800k in career earnings and bloodstocked as a 'star' mare. Her first foal, Salt Life, is a freak galloper and won the SC at age 2 last season. Her 2nd foal is also a freak galloper, Goldie Jo, and she struggled this season. I wasn't even going to enter the SC race but with the family history of winning SC races at age 2 I decided to enter and hope I wouldn't be bumped due to a lack of points. Needlesstosay she surprised me last night with an SC win. Maybe its just luck, maybe it pedigree, or maybe it was just fate. 😀

Beautiful story, Ryan.

And yeah, I believe in all that stuff. Or, rather, I believe that the crucial engine is your belief.

Or maybe it's a skilled trainer and breeder.
Congratulations to your win, Ryan. Goldie Jo is wonderful, just like her dam and aunt.

I know it was some time ago, but condolences to you and yours.
It's just so tragic that you lost your mom in an auto accident. :(

My own dad and mom passed away - each at age 56 and each of died of cancer, this was back in 1994 and 1997 - so I always feel for those who had their parent(s) pass away due to accidents or illnesses. I will always wonder what life would have been like if my parents had lived at least another 20 or more years.

It looks like you might have a wonderful foundation mare for your stable, as hopefully, her offspring will continue producing more great runners too. But even if they don't, her offspring are awesome on the track...especially around SC time. :D I think though, like all good stories, this one will continue for a long while and you will see a nice long line of freaky SC Winning horses, who's pedigrees all lead back to Betty Jo.

Congrats on a very nice win, Ryan! Loved your story, I remember racing against Betty Jo (and losing!) like it was yesterday. So happy that she is also a wonderful broodmare for you. :)

Very cool story. It is awesome that Betty Jo went on to be such a great race mare and broodmare.

Very cool story. I’m always amazed how we all connect this “game” to our real life situations. Long may she reign, so to speak.
