Fun paint sprint rivalry

Post by Tammy Stawicki »

When looking at my upcoming entries I noticed my mare Acanthus was running up against Night Into Day. Admittedly I don't love having stiff competition but I did some digging and these two ladies have quite the rivalry.

Both these ladies are 5 years old and millionaires. They are the top 2 point earners of active paint sprinters and 12th and 15th all time. Acanthus was a steward's cup/simmy winner at age 2 and Night into Day was a steward's cup/simmy winner at age 3. These two ladies will be facing one another for the 11th time on Day 6 (close to 1/2 of their total lifetime races). They have each finished on top in 5 of there 10 prior meetings.

To be honest, Tammy, when I saw Acanthus in that race I almost decided not to run Night Into Day, then I thought, what the heck, it's her last year racing and she owes me nothing. There's no shame in losing to a horse the caliber of Acanthus. <3 :)

They have pretty similar pedigrees too. Both sired by Dashin JJ with Shockfly in the mare line.

I’m off to look for this cross now for my own stable 😁

I love rivalries, even if it's just two horses running against each other in listed stakes races over and over(which is all I have haha) I always love to see them go head to head.

Dashin JJ is definitely an underutilized stud. I try to get someone to him every year. Of the 8 of racing age I have sired by him 4 are stakes winners.

I love Dashin JJ, but have one issue with him... his price. I just can't will myself to spend 40k on a stud fee, I have a hard enough time accepting 25-30k.

I don't mind it personally. It has become increasingly easy to earn at least that much with paints. Sure they aren't all earning it but I'd say at least around 50% of my horses are crossing that threshold. Do I want every stallion standing at 40k, of course not. But the top few fine. That way people aren't going to just dump 100 mares on them and make it so I can't use them at all. Also makes it easier for my second tier sires to try to attract some mares as people are only going to want to breed a few mares to those top-tier stallions given the cost.

For me, it depends on the mare. I didn't have a problem sending Eclipsed Heart to him. Not only had I already used pretty much every other decent stud out there with her, it was probably (and was) her last foal. A lesser mare I would maybe think a little harder about.

Looks like Night Into Day got the win this time around.

It was VERY close though, Tammy. I think the fact that Acanthus had to break from the rail probably had an affect.
