Before my efforts, I would place my hand on the results and slowly slide my hand down so each race would be revealed to me individually. This was not terrible but there was no race suspense as only each final result was revealed.

So I developed a Java application that would take a raceID, parse the HTML data from the race, and use the data to produce the race calls, call by call, so one would not see the final outcome until one clicked through each call.

Since I already had the parsed race data, I computed the internal race track calculations (e.g., Sartin Methodology). From these numbers, it was pretty easy to develop a crude image that would graphically represent these numbers -- each horse would be simply represented by a colored filled "line" going across the screen as the race unfolded. So before each race night, I would write down the set of my raceIDs (my big races would be at the bottom list so these would be my "featured races"). This made race night a fun event for me. Given it took me less than 20 hours to develop, I was extremely happy with my application.

When I told some Simsters about my fun race night, they wanted to try my race viewer. So I posted the Java byte code -- if one had a Java VM on their computer (which was quite common back then), they could run my race viewer.

As I said earlier, it was a very crude race viewer. It worked only with races that had internal calls so it would not work with QH races. You needed to first note and then enter in each raceID . The graphics/animation could have been much much better. But since I was pretty happy with my application and was pretty busy way back then (now I am retired so I tend to write rambling messages so I can relive the past), I never did a major upgrade of the application.

Ooh, can we have this, too? Stole it right from the other thread.
In terms of creating reasons for people to hang on to lower galloping horses and not AJ them, which seems to be a thing we're chasing... creating more opportunities for horses to win once they've gotten through their conditions would be amazing.
Laura Smith wrote: 5 years ago Can we have a few more allowance conditions? For sponsored races, at least, even if they don't make it onto the regularly scheduled racecards?
For example:
non-winners of a stakes race lifetime
non-winners of a stakes race in the last 16 weeks
non-winners or NW2 in the last 16 weeks
non-winners of some amount of money in the last 16 weeks

It can be so hard to race in open allowance company with a marginal horse after they've exhausted their conditions... the jump from NW5 to open allowance is often not worth bothering with.

A couple of asks:
  • Indications on how when and how long horses mature.
Yearling Training - I would love to toss my yearlings into a training program that would ensure they would be fit and equipped by the start of their 2yo year
Ability to enable a catalog for auctions - auto list gallop/mare comment
Mass breed from the bookings page - one click and it bring up all selected booked mares and I can breed them from there

You want something out there. How about some race conditions tied to earnings. e.g nw $25,000 lifetime or nw $3000 last 3 starts, clm $15K for horses nw $30,000 lifetime etc. These races are really common in the standardbred world. I would settle for an expanded claiming schedule and more nw2, nw3 etc. though.

I think an addition being added to see if a horse will mature with age will help keep people from tossing every non stakes/freak that they breed.

While I generally agree with just about everything you said...

...the lovely Steward :)
That's fair. I guess I've never seen it that way -- as a competition -- but we all play our own game, for sure.

I guess I have a different perspective, too, having been around since before gallops, or even workouts, and certainly before hypos and bloodstock comments and whatever, became a thing... and somehow we all managed. Are we better breeders now because we have more information? Oh hell yeah. But are we happier? ...*shrug emoji* ;)
If the SIM doesn't make someone happy they should think about shaking up their play style. It's a game and should always be fun. People have enough stress with real life...that stress on gallop day should pale in comparison.

For anyone that does struggle with that, may I suggest you don't compare yourself to others. Just compare yourself to the previous you. If you're improving your game you're doing just fine. If not, shake it up :)

Especially true for newer players...never forget that you're possibly 50+ seasons behind. Just do you.
Yep it is time to stop comparing now, since my wife beat me in wins, earnings and most other categories this year.. No more comparing now, Flizan!

I don't know how this thread devolved into Polk vs. Flizan but I'm here for it.

Adding to the list
  • Know when a stallion is going to imminently pension and be able to take extraordinary measures to pay the vet to keep them going for a short while longer (another week?)
  • Push off paid retirement to 14, stallions & mares possibly pensioning to 15(16?+).. At least make stallions and mares possibly pension the same age if nothing else (14)
  • Changes on the training page - Set preferences for timed work distances by horse type or split surface and distance to 2 drop downs. Workouts use check boxes and not a drop box?
  • New Player/Mentorship partnerships that are easier to dissolve.
  • Post race auto ship horses to the nearest farm and set requirements (max fee, has amenities), in the case they don't have a home farm set.
  • Auto Ship horses to your nearest farm upon retirement
  • Savings account <so I don't spend it all on breeding or buying horses. Doesn't need to be interest earning or anything.
  • Ability to exclude horses from claiming races on their page, so they never show up on the eligible races page for that horse
  • Enter races 3 weeks out, see races 4 weeks out.
  • Ability to restrict stakes races to grades on the entries page. Rather than show all stakes races.
  • Ability to recall leased horses - or see horses that I've leased to others for the year
  • At the end of every SIM year have a new player only auction with all the nice AJ horses that would otherwise die.
This is what happens when I sit in a car all day....

Yep yep yep on almost all of those...great job Ali. I'd also like to add the ability to move horses from partnerships now. I believe the 3 stew limit per age group eliminates the reason this rule was created. If anyone can think of another reason it should remain in place I'd love to hear it...information is king :)

That is a splendid idea, then the partnerships only have to wait until the horses turn 4 to return them the their "preferred" stables. I mean it isn't like it is hard to bleed cash back out of a partnership right now, so a partnership in most cases would just become a racing operation and storage centre of stewbreds for the rich and infamous to circumvent the 3 stew limit rule.

Sorry, Em!

Back to the real subject. I would love to have an option in date-order when I enter the horses in races. Date and distance to the track at the same time. :)

It could be limited to non-stews if that's what bothers you. Right now you cant send a gelding there and race him til 9 years old and send him to AJ after forced retirement.
