Freak Population in Thoroughbred's?
Anyone have a clue as to the number of FREAKS (by percent) in each thoroughbred division?
Also wondering if that percentage of freaks, to the rest of the population is something that is managed? As to not water down the special classification of FREAK.
I also realize all freaks are not created equal. Some do turn out to be big disappointments.

I’m scratching my head how too many freaks in a division can be managed. By breed I understand, but division is just a distance classification of a horse.Gwayne Mike wrote: ↑4 years ago Anyone have a clue as to the number of FREAKS (by percent) in each thoroughbred division?

Re: Freak Population in Thoroughbred's?
I don't think I've ever bred a T-bred freak...most of my T-bred runners are turf routers, turf milers, with a few turf sprinters. I've bred some stake horses that were competitive against many freaks, but there are some freaks that are just outstanding and it seems like no horse can keep up with them.
I also just dabble in mix breeds... yet there I have bred a lot of freak trotters, and some quarter horses...most of which couldn't out run a fat dog on a hot day.
So, I like to use the gallop tags as a guideline. In my opinion... I get more excited about getting a stakes or allowance horse with T-breds, than I do in seeing I got a freak yearling trotter. I've also very rarely had a mixer allowance even win that many allowance races, while I've had t-bred allowance horses, often win non-graded stakes. I wouldn't be surprised either to see that freaks in t-breds on average are a lot lower than in mix breed divisions. Either that, or I just suck at breeding t-breds. ???

You could probably get a rough idea by adding up the freak gallop %s in the stud book. Wouldn't be totally accurate, for a number of reasons, but not a bad ballpark.
LONG OVERDUE FARM: Keepin' it Canada since Year 16.

The division I looked at, maybe 2% of runners overall, are freaks? A rough guesstimate at best. Thanks Laura!Laura Smith wrote: ↑4 years ago You could probably get a rough idea by adding up the freak gallop %s in the stud book. With so few freak TS producers currently in the stud book, I just added up the counts (34). 44% (15/34) of these freaks are the offspring of 1 extraordinary stallion. If we added in your 2 awesome stallions, these 3 stallions account for 62% of these freaks.Laura Smith wrote: ↑4 years ago You could probably get a rough idea by adding up the freak gallop %s in the stud book. We've gotta come up with a new word. The little preview window just says we are discussing the freak population. I mean, most of us....!

Part of my breeding plan contains a spreadsheet that breaks out gallop comments. For Dirt Routers, I only track those above 1 million in earnings, my stallions (regardless of earnings) and any other special guys (thanks SIMperior). I just did a calculation, and there were 1.31% Freaks from that group. Turf Routers were lower than 1.00% and AW Routers were lower than 0.10%

That seems like such a small number, but when you think of how many TB’s were bred last year, more than 10k colts and more than 10k fillies, so even if we say that there were only 20k bred, at 1% that makes 200, even at 0.5% that’s a lot of freaks across 9 divisions.Garret Folsom wrote: ↑4 years ago Part of my breeding plan contains a spreadsheet that breaks out gallop comments. I makes me feel a little better about how few TB Freaks I've bred!!!Rochelle Zahacy wrote: ↑4 years agoThat seems like such a small number, but when you think of how many TB’s were bred last year, more than 10k colts and more than 10k fillies, so even if we say that there were only 20k bred, at 1% that makes 200, even at 0.5% that’s a lot of freaks across 9 divisions.Garret Folsom wrote: ↑4 years ago Part of my breeding plan contains a spreadsheet that breaks out gallop comments.
