Someone said that horses could be late bloomers after turning 4. I am sure that is not the case.
I didn't really check for late bloomer/peak when galloping my horses, but I'll have to remember to do that in Week 8. That said, I usually have horses improve at 5 and even 6. I checked the one that went just went stakes at age 6 after galloping allowance ages 1-5, and here's the history in terms of late bloomer/peak comments:

Y55-Preseason Trainer: 'Quest for Iditarod' is a stakes quality horse. This horse looks to be about at their peak, but even I can’t always predict the future!
Y54-W8-D7 Galloped
Y54-W8-D7 Trainer: 'Quest for Iditarod' sure moves like a very nice horse! This horse looks to be about at their peak, but even I can’t always predict the future!
Y54-Preseason Galloped
Y54-Preseason Trainer: 'Quest for Iditarod' really wowed me out there! This is at least an allowance horse with some stakes potential. This horse looks to be about at their peak, but even I can’t always predict the future!
Oh my gosh, all of this is giving me the “DON’T SELL ANYTHING EVER!” mentality! 😂

Okay, so I finally did some numbers and here's what I've got.

53 total yearlings
11 claimers (20.7%)
4 solid (7.5%)
9 productive (16.9%)
21 allowance (39.6%)
7 stakes (13.2%)
1 freak (1.9%)

So roughly 55% allowance or better. Now what makes me feel much better about this whole crop is the maturity numbers.

Peak: 7 (1 claimer, 2 productive, 3 allowance, 1 stakes)
Progressive: 20 (4 claimer, 4 solid, 1 productive, 9 allowance, 2 stakes)
Late Bloomers: 26 (6 claimer, 6 productive, 9 allowance, 4 stakes, 1 freak)

Gallop Sires:
Freak: Valar by Kementari
Stakes: Farseer, James Dean, Merlin, Night's Quiet, Obsidian Fury, Shine Bright and Summerland

Maturity Sires:
Peak: Avada Kedavra, Deputy Governor, Farseer, Giant, Loveless, Mister Awesome, Shine Bright
Progressive: Bregman, Conquerer, Dancer, Dave Matthews Band, Fireproof, Follow Your Fate, Giant, Gladiator, Greatest Showman, James Dean, Le Vent Se Leve, Merlin, Moon Faced, Nighteyes, Obsidian Fury x 4, Time Limit, With Us in Spirit
Late Bloomer: After the Disco, Antares, Brilliance, Coleman Hell, Conquerer, Don't You Remember, Farseer, Giant x3, Kementari, Kingdom Come, Lazy Dog, Like Diamonds, Mr. Wonderful, Night's Quiet, Nighteyes x2, Obsidian Fury x2, Omaha Beach, Phenomenal One, Summerland, Thanos, The King, Thunder Horse

Now for my upgrades. NONE of my 29 two-year-olds improved in either gallop or maturity. So that's interesting. However, my older horses were a very very different story.

Allowance to Stakes:
Chronology (Kilgrave) - Progressive to Peak
Hear Your Voice (Hear You Me) - Late Bloomer to Peak
I had 2 more of these that I leased out and now I can't remember who they were haha

Stakes to Freak
Box Office (Indiana Jones) - Late Bloomer to Peak
Guide Her Home (Man of Msytery) - Late Bloomer to Peak
Perfume (Night's Quiet) - Late Bloomer to Peak

Vivacia has always been a freak but finally went from late bloomer to peak as a 4yo mare.

I agree that horses occasionally (very rare) can improve at any age. But the "scheduled" improvement to go from "late bloomer" to "peak reached" can be no later than when the horse turns four.

I think we are both right :)

From a crop of 12 foals, my absolute favorite, a colt by Kingdom Come out of my homebred Love Unwavering galloped freak with the late bloomer comment! I'm extremely pleased. This is my first homebred freak by Kingdom Come, and I'm very happy.

Had festivus 2.0 with Sten’s Dirty things auction and had got 2 stakes gallopers and 3 allowances out of 6 to gallop. Super happy about that!

She was the star of my show this go around.

A nice mix of speed and endurance in her breeding.

A stakes galloper, late bloomer with a bright future, so reach for your sunglasses!

I see a lot of people are galloping their 2+ year old horses during break to look for upgrades/downgrades. Does galloping during the break for older horses still come with the normal training fatigue? In other words, my assumption is that you would not want to gallop a horse that ran in Week 16 or a horse that you plan to run in Week 1? Is this accurate or is there a "free pass" during the break?

Hey Veritas,

Its kinda a little of both. You accumulate half rest during the break on the days when races are open and the day rate is being charged. So if you gallop on Saturday after races open your horse will get an extra 3 days (ish) of rest which is about what it takes to recover from a gallop. That means you are kind of getting a free gallop. A lot of people also choose not to gallop older horses so they can get a little bit of extra rest. Also, make sure your horses, especially those who ran week 16, arent getting the "be careful" message before you gallop them because they can still get injured.

AJR,
Thanks! Did not connect those dots when reading the help section. This is useful to know.

I only had the one horse improve and she was 3. I suspect you’ll have plenty of horses improve in the week 9 change, I remember I had way more horses change at that time last year.
