looking to tighen my belt

Post by The Harlequins »

Hi all, over this past 3months i have brought claimed and been gifted horses.

I have noticed with hindsight that a lot of really big trainers dont use whisper or soundness.

Are these options not much of a advantage for there cost.

Just trying to save a few bucks when in the bigger pond

I personally like to use them because I believe it gives me the ability to place my horses in the best possible races and I think this will lead to me making back the money I spent. Other people may disagree with me but that's just my two cents :)

I don't use the whisperer, but soundness is useful as an unsound horse needs a longer rest between races.

I always whisper and ask vet for soundness on anything I plan on running, Productive and up (I don't whisper my AW horses). I feel it helps me place the horse to it's best advantage. If you are tightening your belt, and making the switch out of newbie land, this is a good time to look at your racers and get rid of any that are not consistently bringing home a check of some kind. That's imo. Good Luck in moving forward!

I use both on all my horses that race. I just look at it as a necessary expense. But if you are looking to tighten your belt, I think vetting for soundness may provide the better value. Knowing a horse's soundness can save or make you money by having a better idea of when to schedule your horses' races. Saving by avoiding possible injuries (racing a very unsound horse biweekly) or making money by entering very sound/sound horses more frequently (every two weeks).

I always use the whisperer frank,if you ship a horse half way round the world to race on ground it doesn’t like your wasting more than the grand it costs to find out.

I usually use both on all of my horses because I need every bit of help I can get!

I track recovery time after my first time starters race so I have no real need to pay for soundness checks.

I only use the whisperer for my good horses, usually most of the stakes+, it's usually pretty easy to figure out after racing the horse in different conditions, really only helpful with a young horse so you know what to expect and can try to place them in the best conditions for them to run well right off the bat. Soundness I rarely use, usually only on really good horses, or maybe a good horse that is being difficult and trying to see if there's a reason for it other than to annoy me.

The fewer horses you have, the more $ practical it is to use both?
