How Did Your Year Go?

Post by Carole Hanson »

Started off great, went downhill a bit since week 10 but picked up some slack in the final week and finished off on a high getting 2 Grade 1 wins on the final day, both with 2yos too which is the first time I’ve achieved that!

Stats for year 54:
122 : 49-16-16 Win-40.2% OTB-66.4%
Stakes Wins: 22
Grade 1 Wins: 6
Maiden Wins: 6
2yo Wins: 19
Earnings: $2,436,760

Stats for year 55:
126 : 31-34-21 Win-24.6% OTB-68.3%
Stakes Wins: 15
Grade 1 Wins: 7
Maiden Wins: 7
2yo Wins: 13
Earnings: $2,437,140

-Better OTB %
-More earnings (by $380 lol)
-More Grade 1 wins
-Better % Grade 1 wins/Stakes wins
-More maiden wins

Not bad, but I have a feeling the next few seasons will be much better!

Like most years it's up for awhile, down for awhile and, you get the point. This year seemed very flat with no big weeks and no really bad weeks. As far as goals I want to be over 20% wins and I did 21.2%, depending on the number of races I like to be about $1.5 million earnings and I did $1.825 million and I like to have a least $10,000 earnings per start and came up short with $9,457.

I had a surprise G1 with a turf router, One Quiet Step. My exciting horse, 2 year old, dirt router As People See Me, started his career with a 96 SF win, followed by a tepid 86 SF, G3 win. This second race made me duck a few of the other "heavy hitter" races in week 16 and he did squeak out a nose victory in the G2 Empire Maker Stakes running a 99 SF. I get to be excited about the Triple Crown Trail next season.

Lastly I have a yearling DR colt, Wonderful Saint, who will keep me in suspense until week 10 next year.

All and all it was a fun year.

Yr 55:
986 : 183-161-168 Win-18.6% OTB-51.9%
Stakes Wins: 11
G1 Wins: 1
Maiden Wins: 72
2yo Wins: 33
Earnings: $3,544,245

Yr 54:
520 : 100-93-69 Win-19.2% OTB-50.4%
Stakes Wins: 12
G1 Wins: 1
Maiden Wins: 37
2yo Wins: 30
Earnings: $1,878,480

First things first, holy freaking maiden wins!! The first half of the year was really, really slow. How slow? SEVEN of my stakes wins were in weeks 13-16 with 2 other stakes wins being in week 11. My other 2 stakes wins, those were in weeks 2 and 3, yup, slow start. I wish I had jotted down my stats but at one point I remember the number of wins I had for the year was lower than my number of 2nd and 3rd place finishes, which isn't something that has ever happened since I've figured out my game and stable, the last time my number of wins wasn't the highest number of my OTB finishes, year 35. At one point my OTB% was below 45% and win% was below 15% if I'm remembering correctly. Safe to say though, my horses got their act together and finished strong. My barn usually tends to start slow, not THIS slow, but slow and then picks up speed as the year goes on.

Overall I'm quite happy with my year, granted how the year started REALLY lowered expectations, but they didn't do too bad, got my 2,000th win, better OTB% than last year, tons and tons of maiden wins, more earnings and got a SC win! Would've liked to be more competitive in stakes races, but again, after how the year started, my expectations really shifted  They really did rally at the end, 4 stakes wins in the final 2 weeks, one being the SC, I'll take that any day :D

I have to admit with some shame that my stats are really terrible, but I won a ton of money this year...lol. I'll take the money under those circumstances but I hope next year my stat numbers will look a lot better.

1,158 : 97-138-148 -- Win-8.4% -- OTB-33.1% -- 15 Stake wins -- 6 Grade 1 wins -- 44 maiden wins --19 maiden 2yr old wins.

Money won: $9,025,205

Year 54 had slightly better win stats, but I didn't win near the amount of money.
1,125 : 103-118-139 -- Win-9.2% -- OTB-32.0% -- 11 -- 4 -- 34 -- 18 -- $4,042,180

I hope my stats will be a lot better next year. For some past few Sim years, I've been being a lot more selective in what mares I've bred and am trying to reduce the number of runners I have in the racing barn. I'm reducing my mixers by a good number and going back to concentrating on the T-breds.

I think I am finally starting to see the results of this, with horses like my freaks, Roughian, Mal, Foretold, and Aloft...which marks the first time in my stable I've had more than one or two T-bred freaks running at the same time.

I am neither cheering loudly into the sky or burying myself underground from my result these years that has had its ups and downs

stat wise this year and last year are quite similar where som stats have gone up and some down
55 790 : 226-172-134 Win-28.6% OTB-67.3% 32 8 55 88 $7,028,410
54 681 : 204-135-103 Win-30.0% OTB-64.9% 39 6 63 84 $5,416,105

win % has gone sligthly down while otb percentage is slightly up
number of stake wins are down but both number of g1 wins and money earned has gone up but I also raed about 100 more races this year

started the season on a high note with a win in the pegasus all weather sprint with Red Running hood and did not get a win in the stewards cup but a bunch of 2nd and 3rd place finishes

All in all it was a decent season and I can see some bright skies in the future

That was Eric Nalbone's plan.
Actually... It worked out rather well for him. 8-)

He use to post quite often about his world domination plan, using Pinky and The Brain to hammer in his point:

55 731 : 175-156-117 Win-23.9% OTB-61.3% 22 7 65 64 $5,752,320
54 631 : 151-97-122 Win-23.9% OTB-58.6% 20 3 50 53 $3,677,945

For myself it was a good year. Tied my best win percentage, achieved my highest OTB percentage. Broke my own record for Stakes wins and Group 1 wins, so very pleased for my barn. I am hoping to improve next year as well. Overall, I had a lot of fun this year!

5% G1 winners from starters just isn’t good enough, Danny. PICK UP YOUR GAME

I had an amazing year by some metrics but really struggled to crack a decent G1. However, I finished the year with my 5th G1 win of the year and 160th lifetime with homebred It Is Written.

I should get used to not having marquee horses. Definitely don’t have anything really standing out for next season. Hoping 3 seasons into the future I’ll have a top horse again! In the mean time, this group are winning all the small stuff at an amazing rate so the cash will keep flowing.

It's been a long year, just the one winner which was only a maiden but I have just re started playing not too long ago and am terrible at managing my barn's money and finding horses worth having, so nothing special happened and some questionable purchases hanging out in my barn. I hope for a better year next year, there is one yearling I bought that I am looking forward to running, so here's to a better season on it's way! :D
