Points
Couple of thoughts on points.
1. What about if stakes race eligibility is first determined by points earned in stakes races only for 3 year olds and up? Would avoid situations where a 9 year old horse running exclusively in claimers can bump a 3 year old G1 winner from a race. Leave 2YOs out of this since they wouldn't have had much of a chance to run in stakes yet.
2. Pay out points to Top 5. $$$ earnings go to the top 5, why not points? One example - on the Derby trail specifically you get penalized for taking a shot in the Steward's Cup. You can have a monster who runs 4th of 16 with a big figure, and comes out with zero points for the effort. Can't see a good reason top 5 shouldn't get some points.
That's all I've got for now.

Re: Points
Love it Danny. I've got an alternate to the first idea that may or may not work? Only count points for races that year so the old claimer that got a bunch of points in the past still wouldn't make it in as it hasn't earned very much this year.
yeah

Re: Points
What happens to the 6 or 7 year olds that just upgraded to freak that year, have been running lights out all season and get bumped to a 5 year old who peaked as a 4yo and has been off form all year? Obviously, whenever you go by points, some worthy horse is going to get bumped out. Maybe it should just be points from that single year alone. So if you want to run in the SC Classic, your points have to be from that particular year.

Re: Points
Aren't horses upgraded to freak status, inferior to those who were a freak at birth?
Just a side question to the original subject of the thread.
This, at any rate, has been my limited understanding of the matter.

Not necessarily, they can be top/mid/low tier freak when improving or at birth. At least I'm pretty sure that's the case.Gwayne Mike wrote: ↑3 years ago Aren't horses upgraded to freak status, inferior to those who were a freak at birth?

Re: Points
I’ve got no issue if it looks at a rolling average over time. If that’s too difficult to do, I still prefer my original idea over the way things currently are. A 6 year old turning into a world beating freak is pretty darn rare.Nena Olson wrote: ↑3 years ago What happens to the 6 or 7 year olds that just upgraded to freak that year, have been running lights out all season and get bumped to a 5 year old who peaked as a 4yo and has been off form all year? Bumping because this really is something I feel strongly about - point #2 especially more than point #1.
