The SIM Turf Route Lineal Championship

Post by Dan Kauffman »

I decided to have some fun and do something that I've seen done with other individual and team sports. I created a SIM Turf Route Championship, and charted the championship through the SIM's entire history to date.
Here's how it works: I went back to Year 1 and found the first Grade 1 turf route race contested (the Arcadia Turf Championship in Week 2). The winner of that race was crowned the first SIM turf route champion. He (or she) could only lose it by getting defeated in a later (turf) race, or by retiring (there wound up being a couple noted exceptions). In event of a champion's retirement, the next Grade 1 race would crown a new champion (two notes: the Arc was a listed stakes race in some early years, which is absurd, so that race often served as the first “G1” race after the previous champ retired; and if more than one G1 race happened at the same time, the richest of them would be the one that crowned the next champ).
I ran into a few interesting situations:
• The Scarlet Nite's last handful of races were at other distances. Rather than have the title held up for half a year (Year 12), I “stripped” Scarlet Nite of the title and gave it to the next winner of a G1. (I did this a couple other times in similar circumstances.)
• There also were Arc winners who quickly retired. I decided to use the SC Turf races two weeks later to crown one last champion in those years.
• Stormwind won the title in Year 41, then didn't race for eight weeks, including the entire second half of Year 41. That was just too long a gap, so I stripped him of the title and gave it to the next G1 winner (though he does get credit for winning it).
• Once the Pegasus Turf races started up, if one of those years started with the title “vacant”, I used the Pegasus Turf to crown the next champion (instead of the Australia G1 in Week 1).
Remember, this is all in good fun! So let's go …

I joined in 2006, and was thinking the same thing...haven't thought about some of those horses in so long...they were So Famous when I first joined, and I thought I would never be able to acquire one even close to their quality. It was fun to see their names and headshots on this list. : )

Great Job Dan !

BREAKING: Champion Moulay El Hassan entered for Pegasus Turf
SUNSHINE PARK, Fla. — Reigning SIM Turf Route champion Moulay El Hassan, coming off a one-length victory in Year 55's season-ending Steward's Cup Turf to capture the title for the first time, will defend the title in the Grade 1, $2 million Pegasus Turf on Year 56, Week 2, Day 5.
Moulay El Hassan, a 4-year-old colt owned by Nick Gilmore and bred by The Steward, is undefeated since winning the Steward's Cup Bunbury at the end of Year 54, a streak of seven straight victories. He knocked off defending champion With Drama, previous champion Manic and eight others in the SC Turf to become the 146th holder of the championship (16 horses have won it twice, two have won it three times).
Early Pegasus Turf entrants include former champions Artilleryman and Roughian.

This is excellent.

I was hoping Sideshow would have had a title reign in there, but he never really won the big races, but was always close.

I definitely want to try this with AW Routers.

Four former champions, loaded field target Moulay El Hassan in Pegasus Turf
SUNSHINE PARK, Fla. — Defending turf route lineal champion Moulay El Hassan (Nick Gilmore) will have his hands full in his first defense against a full field of talented challengers — including previous champions With Drama, Manic, Roughian and Artilleryman — in the Grade 1, $2 million Pegasus Turf on Friday.
Moulay El Hassan (9: 8-0-0), an earner of almost $3.5 million, has won his last seven starts and claimed the championship from With Drama with his victory in last year's Steward's Cup Turf. If he defends it successfully on Friday against a field featuring 11 other millionaires — and bucks recent history in the process — he will surely cement his case as the top active turf route racehorse.
The last successful title defense came in last year's Desert Gold Stakes in Week 4, with Don't Forget Me (now retired) pulling it off. None of the previous four champions (Artilleryman, Roughian, Manic and With Drama) made a successful defense — not surprising considering the depth of talent in turf routing's major races.
It would not be a surprise to see one of the four previous titleholders in the Pegasus Turf become the first multi-time champion since Antares' second reign early in Year 53.
Artilleryman (Kaine Saracen, 24: 17-4-2) is the top earner in the field at more than $6.5 million, and won the $3 million Melbourne Trophy last out.
Roughian (Stormy Peak, 15: 7-6-1), a superstar filly, has earned more than $5.5 million, is almost dead even with Moulay El Hassan in earnings per start and has hit the board in the Chicago Million, Arc de Triomphe and SC Filly and Mare Turf, although she hasn't won since taking the G1 Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini.
Manic (Nena Olson, 10: 6-1-1), the Chicago Million champion, finished fifth in both the Arc and SC Turf and will try to bounce back.
With Drama (Glenn Larson, 17: 8-2-3), the reigning Arc champion with earnings north of $4.5 million, had a four-race winning streak snapped with a third-place finish in the SC Turf.
Two other standout fillies will attempt to join the list of lineal champions. Me in Black (Leigh Ann Anderson, 9: 8-0-1) has won her last five starts — taking the International Oaks last midseason, then edging Summertime Crush by a nose to claim the SC Filly and Mare Turf. Summertime Crush (Joseph Depaulo, 16: 12-3-0) has earned more than $3 million and won three straight G1 outings before the SC F&M Turf heartbreaker.
The other contenders, who are seeking their first lineal championship:
Hold On Me (Pete Vella, 22: 10-4-3) won the G1 Grande Premio Sao Paulo late last year, but was third in a close finish last out in the $3 million, G1 Arima Kinen in Japan.
Mal (Stormy Peak, 10: 5-3-1) won three straight G1 outings, capped by a victory in the $2 million, G1 Cox Trophy in Australia, before settling for second in the SC Turf.
Navy Ship (Glenn Escobar, 22: 8-4-2) won the G1 Hong Kong Champions Route last year but is coming off two off-the-board efforts (the G1 Japan Trophy and the Arima Kinen).
One Quiet Step (Keith Maidlow, 19: 7-5-3), the only gelding in the field, won the G1 London Cup last midseason but was eighth and fourth in his two stakes starts since.
Rhys (Nena Olson, 10: 6-1-0) enters on a two-race winning streak, taking the G1 English Champion Stakes last out, and could be a popular sleeper choice.
Yang Wenli (Danny Derby, 9: 3-3-3) stayed in Australia for four G1 outings last year and won titles in the Melbourne and Australian derbies before finishing second in the Cox Trophy and Melbourne Trophy.

BREAKING: Manic becomes 17th multi-time champion with Pegasus Turf victory
SUNSHINE PARK, Fla. — Manic, a 4-year-old colt owned and bred by Nena Olson, reclaimed the SIM Turf Route lineal championship with an impressive and decisive victory in Friday's Grade 1, $2 million Pegasus Turf.
Manic, who first became the champion with his victory in last year's G1 Chicago Million before dropping the title to With Drama in the G1 Arc de Triomphe, bested runner-up Summertime Crush (Joseph Depaulo) by more than a length in the Pegasus Turf for his richest victory to date.
Olson becomes the seventh owner to have at least five title reigns, joining a list that includes Ara Davies (11), Laura Ferguson (7), Kaine Saracen (6), Susie Rydell (6), Brianna McKenzie (5) and Eric Nalbone (5).
Defending champion Moulay El Hassan (Nick Gilmore), who won the title with a victory in last year's season-ending Steward's Cup Turf, finished a disappointing seventh in the Pegasus Turf. He is the fifth straight champion to drop the title in his or her first defense.
Manic has already been entered in the Grade 1 Saudi Turf Cup in two weeks.

BREAKING: Longbird stuns Manic, becomes TR lineal champion
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Longbird, a 5-year-old colt owned and bred by Danny Derby, became the 147th horse to hold the SIM Turf Route lineal championship when he stunned defending and two-time champion Manic (Nena Olson) by a neck to win the Saudi Turf Cup on Friday night.
It is Longbird's fifth victory in 17 career starts, though the colt has been a solid money-earner with almost $3 million in earnings to date. It also marks the first time a horse owned by Derby — a Hall of Fame trainer — has held the championship.
Former champion Moulay El Hassan, last year's Steward's Cup Turf winner, finished third another length-and-a-half behind. Fade to Black and Hold On Me rounded out the top five.
Longbird is currently scheduled to make his first defense in the Grade 1, $4 million Desert Turf Classic in two weeks' time. The defending champion has failed to retain the title in each of the last seven defenses.

PREVIEW: Longbird defends TRLC in Desert Turf Classic
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Reigning turf route lineal champion Longbird (Danny Derby) will make his first defense in Friday night's Desert Turf Classic against eight challengers, including former two-time champion Manic (Nena Olson) and former titleholder With Drama (Glenn Larson).
Longbird (17: 5-7-5, $2,935,000) won the title two weeks ago in the Grade 1 Saudi Cup Turf on this track, taking the championship from runner-up Manic (12: 7-2-1, $2,797,500) by a neck, with another former champion, Moulay El Hassan, third 1½ lengths back.
Longbird is a multi-surface superstar, having previously won the Grade 1 All Weather Derby two years ago and the Plastics Classic last year. Derby has indicated Longbird will get the opportunity to run on the dirt, as well.
Manic is vying to become the third three-time TRLC champion — he would join Like Diamonds and Nightmarch with a victory. However, Manic has never won a race at 12 furlongs, placing fifth in both the Arc de Triomphe and Steward's Cup Turf last year.
With Drama (19: 8-3-3, $4,917,000) leads the field in earnings and will try to regain the title he first won in last year's Arc. Unlike Manic, 12 furlongs appears to be With Drama's preferred surface. He has lost three straight, however, so confidence could be a small issue.
Of the other contenders, Rhys (Nena Olson, 12: 7-2-0, $1,499,000) may be the one to watch. He has won three of his last four outings, including a 3½-length destruction of With Drama last out in the Saudi Turf Marathon, and has posted 91 speed figures in each of those four outings.
The rest of the field, in order of career earnings:
• A Fighter (Laura Ferguson, 16: 8-1-3, $3,257,500) won the Grade 1 Japan Trophy and edged Longbird by a neck to take the Grade 1, $1.5 million Arima Kinen in his last two outings last year, posting speed figures of 92 and 95. He was a disappointing 10th in the Pegasus Turf last out four weeks ago, at a distance (9.5 furlongs) that is probably shorter than he wants.
• Mal (Stormy Peak, 11: 5-3-1, $2,463,000) won the Grade 1, $1 million Cox Trophy with a 90 late last year, then closed the year with a runner-up effort to Moulay El Hassan in the SC Turf before finishing fourth in the Pegasus Turf four weeks ago. He has finished second in each of his two efforts at 12 furlongs, with figures of 83 and 87.
• Take By Storm (Amy Bahama, 16: 7-3-1, $1,646,500), winner of the Louisville Bunbury two years ago, snapped a five-race winless streak in the Tergat Handicap in Kenya three weeks ago, running a 90 speed figure. Early last year, he won the 12-furlong, Grade 2 Pakistan Derby with a 92, so on the right day the speed is there.
• It Is Written (Cleo Patra, 10:7-1-1, $649,000) has won three of her last four starts, all of them Grade 1 outings, all with figures between 90 and 93. Of the most note is a Year 55-ending win in the 12-furlong Royal Australian Oaks with a 92. This is her first time facing mixed company.
• Kitty Kitty Kitten (Brian Leavitt, 10: 3-3-2, $389,000), another filly, is coming off a victory in the Early Morning Stakes in Ireland three weeks ago, with an 89 speed figure. That snapped a three-race winless streak. She has never won a Grade 1 title. On an encouraging note, she posted a 92 in her only attempt at 12 furlongs, running third by a neck and a nose in last year's Irish Oaks.
NOTES: A new champion has been crowned in each of the last seven races that the title was on the line. … The championship has been contested 17 times in the Desert Turf Classic, and only once was it successfully defended, by Kareem Abdul in Year 30.

Dan,
Thanks for doing this thread... it's been very interesting..and a great way to bring back to mind some of the great horses from The Sim's past. I had to have taken quite a long time to do the research and post all the headshots. Plus the time you have put in on the updates.

Needless to say, but I will, lol... I hope to see Mal's headshot joining them. ;)
