tough training decision..

Post by Stormy Peak »

I sometimes think running those lowly claimers are less stressful than the 'big horses' :P

Two of my 'big horses' Mal and Roughian had hard campaigns last year, then I raced them Wk 2 in the Pegasus raced, after which I decided they both get a long break...keeping in mind Wk 6 had some major races in the UAE.

However, I kind of thought going weeks 3, 4 and 5 for a rest was too long, and rather than do some exercises with them, I decided to vet them until they were go to go and then give them each a 5 furlong workout. I am hoping this will be ok, still give them some rest between now and Friday of Week 6.

Neither have had a workout for some years...so maybe this will be a good thing, given it's not as tiresome as a race would have been during week 4, then racing again week 6. I always feel like I'm going to fail no matter what I do. Over the years, I've allowed my 'big' horses the full 3 weeks, and I've tried light exercise and now I'm going to try a workout. I've just never a comfortable feeling in doing any of them though. :P

At 5 Furlongs on Turf (Roughian, is 'somewhat unsound' and Mal is 'sound' - and they both raced in the same race last time out)

Roughian: Wk4-D3 worked 0:57:91 -- She beat her best time from Y53-Wk6-D6 of 0:58:04

Mal: Wk4-D2 worked: 0:58.07 -- He also beat his best time from Y54-Wk7-D4 of 0:58:68

Their times seem to indicate they are not slowing up :P

I did a similar schedule with Creator of Worlds. I decided to have him workout Week 2 (Barrier), so I could race him Saudi week 4. He ran a 56.76, which is one of the fastest all time (not even his fastest), now I am hoping he does what he is supposed to, which is win a race.

lol, hopefully he does well.

After doing my best to avoid stakes races for the easy money (for me) to be found in in allowances and claiming races, I'm racing three horses in G3s in the next week. I've chewed all my nails to the quick. I had a nightmare where one of my horses finished so far in the back that the server couldn't calculate it and caught on fire.

I have no idea how people handle this tension every week.
