Introducing: A Complete Historical Guide to the Louisville Derby

Post by Mara Jade Vess »

The Louisville Derby is now 2 weeks away! One of the most coveted and storied races in the SIM, the Derby is a highlight of the year for many SIMsters, and with me having an abundance of free time in 2020, I decided to embark on this massive project.

For the last eight months, I’ve been working on and off on a comprehensive historical guide for the Louisville Derby, based off of the real-life variant – the media guide for the Kentucky Derby.

As of right now, the data is available at this Google Sheets link. The front index page has clickable links that will take you to whatever stat you’d like to see. To apply filters or sorting, select the range you'd like to filter and click the Filter Views button (one to the right of the printer icon). Alternatively, if you'd like to edit the information yourself, go to File > Make A Copy and you’ll have free range to do what you want.

Examples of data included are:
• Prep races for all Derby starters and winners
• Comprehensive timing
• Post position records
• Dams and sires of Derby winners
• Complete owner and breeder records

I am planning on an interactive version of this on Google Sheets, as well as a full PDF. It will also be updated every year. Please feel free to let me know about any errors, there are well over 40,000 individual cells and there are definitely some errors. Also thanks to Nini Hunter for helping and also keeping me sane over the course of this project.

Hopefully you guys enjoy – it was quite the undertaking!

I haven't even clicked on it yet and it's already the best thing I've ever seen.

This is seriously one of the best things anyone has ever done in the SIM, EVER. Seriously Mara, thank you for piecing this together. This took a tremendous amount of effort, and you should be so proud because this amazing!! You’re the best SIM historian we’ve ever seen.

I'm glad you all like it! I've updated a few things for Y57 already (namely, the Track Condition and Purse sections). Once Y57's edition runs, it should be updated within a week.

I don't think anyone who has won the Derby is allowed to say this :D

My mind is agog with all the work and time you put into this, Mara! It is a wonderful read; when I have a few minutes here and there, I like to go in and browse through all the information. You rock!!

Very fun data set. Thank you - thank you.
Bumping this up a bit because this is Louisville Derby week and MJV's historical vortex is very fun to get lost in for hours. jX

Now that the Derby has come and gone for another year, the spreadsheet has been updated! Here are some highlights:

- Jon Xett became the only breeder other than the Steward to have done the Oaks-Derby double, in which he is the breeder of record of the winners in both races
- Dave Matthews Band becomes the fourth sire to produce back to back Derby winners, joining the likes of Gentleman, Maelstrom, and Messiah
- Post #5 is officially the winningest in the Derby with 4 wins from 19 starts, and post #12 has the highest OTB with 7 OTB finishes in 19 starts
- This Derby had the 6th highest win payout at $4,945

I am still in the process of adding all of the stakes preps for starters, which should be done by the end of the week. Thanks for all the kind words and continued support!

Stakes preps of Y57 Derby starters have now been added. I've also fixed a few formatting issues and corrected some errors. Records of each stakes prep are currently a work in progress.

Updated to Y58. Link in my signature.

Counts of starter prep races are not updated – I will be adding complete records at some point.

Congrats to Jack Meyer and Crimson Horizons on the win.

I'm just seeing this and trying to figure out who my 8 starters have been in the Derby. I can only think of 4
