A+ Thoroughbred Hypo

Post by Danny Derby »

At the start of each year I'll go through my barn and retire or sell horses who galloped Allowance or worse and have the peak comment. If they've got a pedigree behind them, I'll try and give them a couple of starts before that point.

So going through this exercise earlier today I came across Ahdom Vered. She didn't do anything on the track as a productive/peak galloper, and whether or not she had a magical improvement ahead of her we'll never know now. She is amazingly well bred though, being the daughter of a Steward's Cup winner and from the Wish Upon A Star/Let It Go family by Allonsy. Retired her and asked the bloodstock agent, and was very pleased to get the Blue Hen comment. I wasn't expecting it given her lackluster racing ability, but was thrilled to have it from one with her pedigree.

The next thing I'll normally do with a Blue Hen is hypomate them to a couple of stallions just to give myself a baseline for them. I've never had anything hypo better than an A before, but to my shock she hypod an A+ to a top stallion that I won't name right now. I've obviously been playing for many years and have a top quality broodmare band, and this is my first time seeing an A+ thoroughbred hypo in my stable, and only the second one I've seen overall other than one Pete Vella has.

So my question is, does anyone else have any TB mares who can throw an A+ hypo? If so, what kind of foals have they produced?

I have an Allonsy filly that I retired yesterday. She was a stakes galloper who downgraded. She has A hypos with a lot of stallions. My first ever A TB that is not a steeplechaser. I am thinking that Allonsy might just be a potential great BM sire?

Never seen an A+ on a flat racing TB. Convinced they don’t exist and you and Pete are lying 😝

Now you have me hoping that you'll update us later with what her first foal gallops, assuming you breed on an A+ cross.

In the mid-30s, Just Victory (JV) was the DR hypo monster. JV had at least one reported A+ hypo with tons of A hypos reported. Given JV's hypos, most of his offspring were huge disappointments -- even when they galloped stakes or better. There was a change in the hypos some time afterwards -- possibly caused by JV.

That name totally rings a bell! And JV/Stay Inside definitely makes sense, and sends me way back.

I'm pretty sure I had an A+ hypo out of Born Wild to Trafalgar for twins - they were Devil May Care a stakes galloping earner of $500k, and Irene Adler, an allowance galloper (she may or may not have upgraded later), who earned $188k. It's hard to tell, because the notes page gets removed when a horse dies, and these were all pre the hypo-grades page. I remember some JV/Stay Inside A+ hypos as well.

I think my filly Starcrossed (now Starcrossed I) was an A+ hypo as well. Again, it's hard to tell once the notes page is gone.

That said, I haven't heard of many A+ hypos for flat racing TBs since the hypos were adjusted several years ago.

This is my A+ Hypo to DMB mare.

Both offspring by him are stakes gallopers which in DR means if they get lucky they make 150k in there career.

You would think that with the way DMB spits out freaks one of those should have been a freak, but these kinds of things don’t happen in my barn.

Maybe they improve, who knows.

I just have the smallest of toes in the DR water, but if stakes means so little they should do something about the scale on that! and yes I can confirm as anyone can that is an A+ hypo, never saw one until now either.

Agreed, but it's impossible to "only" adjust DRs... If they adjusted gallops down to where DR stakes were actually stakes quality, most other divisions would top out at allowance, lol.

I thought it was just me  I've bred DMB to my top mares and end up with claimers, productive, etc...

But finally got a freak in this year's yearling group! So there's hope lol

'Stakes' gallopers are still quite good horses, and are generally as the gallop describes (stakes horses). I'm not sure what people are expecting if it's not for most horses who are stakes gallopers to be competitive in stakes horses - nothing in the comment says 'This horse is guaranteed to be a superstar' or 'This is a surefire G1 winner' ... it just says the horse can compete in normal stakes races. Here's a good example of a stakes galloper who satisfies the implications of his gallop comment just fine.

In my racing barn, the 10 highest earners currently are split 50/50 between 'Stakes' and 'Freak'. Seven horses currently active in my barn have earned over $500k, and three are 'Stakes.'
