Ever seen a roan thoroughbred?
So I bred a foal, went with random color, and got a roan TB filly. I started daydeaming about her becoming a freak (as you do... ) and googled "roan thoroughbred" for inspiration for her headshot (cause I plan ahead and don't include claimers in my plans ).
I found this article that I thought was a little interesting. And I want to make clear that I have absolutely no opinion about this and I know next to nothing about real thoroughbreds (my family had a small cat breeding "operation" when I was young and the genetics and colourings always fascinated me, that's all...) and I don't know anything about the author, but...sometimes I get curious and just need to ask!
This article states: "Is it possible to see a true roan thoroughbred? In a word - NO. You will remember from the Genetics
of Grey article that “it takes a grey to make a grey.” And that it true because the grey gene is
dominant to any other inherited color. The same is true of Roan. It takes a roan to make a roan.
Because there are no roan thoroughbreds, there can logically never be any roan thoroughbreds
without the introduction of some other breed in which the roan pattern naturally appears.
Quarter horses and draft breeds frequently see roan foals. But thoroughbreds never do."
So how come I have this roan foal in my barn?
Is it because this is a game and not a perfect real life simulation? Or is the subject some TB debate thing with different camps and not that simple? Or are the roan babies just too adorable to not be here? (Or did my mare secretly meet with the neighbour's old QH..?) What's your best guess?

Re: Ever seen a roan thoroughbred?
I think in real life greying out TBs are still called or were called roan. Especially ones that might have been born bay or chestnut.. and they have some grey coming through and ... get called roan. Happens in many breeds.
Testing for colour genetics has not been around that long really. Also I think there could be a Rabicano gene in TBs? That is called roan by many even in Quarter horses even though its not.

Re: Ever seen a roan thoroughbred?
Technically there are 7 Roan Thoroughbreds in history that lived in New Zealand but I think when The Steward added them it was more likely because horses like Winning Colors who are very grey were considered roan. You can this in early "roan" SIM horses like King Of Jesters who are also grey but get the roan color. As it evolved though it became more actual roan similar to how the New Zealand horses are. Although it still happens from time to time like with Talus.

Grey and Roan are both colours recognised by the UK Jockey Club.

Re: Ever seen a roan thoroughbred?
I always get confused by this, but per the US JC website they call a horse roan if the white is mixed with a color other than black. If black/white the horse is gray.

Re: Ever seen a roan thoroughbred?
So it is a taking sides matter?
There seems to be at least some opinions here: "The Jockey Club has incorrectly registered grey Thoroughbreds as roans for a number of years. Their "roan" designation referred to bay or chestnut-based greys, horses that progressively got lighter as they aged (as is the nature of grey). "
The New Zealand roans
I'm pretty sure mine is a stripy Kiwi then.

Honestly wouldn't it be cool if someone ordered a headshot for there "white" sim horse and requested something like that. It'd be a cool headshot.Cleo Patra wrote: ↑3 years ago This brought to mind a recent race in Queensland, Australia:

Re: Ever seen a roan thoroughbred?
This I find quite interesting.. horses of the same colour as Catch a Bird would have been considered a Chimera in the genetics classes I had taken. Though, I'm not sure how much ofa scientifically proven thing it is!

Though, if that's the case... The roan offspring is interesting!
