Secretariat Derby: Upset or Expected?

Post by Ronnie Dee »

The Grade 1 Secretariat Derby was won by the only gelding in the race.

Was this outcome an upset or expected?

Upset Argument: the gelding was exiting a NW2. There were 4 much more accomplished horses in the race. The gelding was probably just entered for a check (5th place).

Expected Argument: the 4 major contenders were front runners. The gelding was a deep closer. With a hotly contested pace, the gelding would run past the tiring front runners in deep stretch. Plus, the lightly raced gelding had only 1 loss while the other entries had multiple losses so he would be more confident.

(I was going to pose this as a poll question but I could not figure out how to do it.)

I don't think it was an upset, personally. Your horse was lightly raced but 2 for 3 going in, had comparable speed figures (including a 91), and is at peak now.... and looks very legit at this point!
