Just curious, because I have a few getting up there in age and they are still running okay, and this question popped into my head

Back before we could extend a horse's racing career, I had this guy, who was still running strong as a 9 year old. Made me sick when he was forced into retirement at the end of his 9th year. He finished 3rd behind the great Casey's Shadow and Chickadee in the SC Steeplechase Race in the last race he was allowed to run.

All Your Might
had his biggest career win the Steward's Cup Mile at the age of 11 in his very last race. Proving that no matter how old the horse is you can win the Steward's Cup.

As a more recent example Go West was retired at 10. The turfers seem to last longer.

I think it is very much category specific: turf milers and other milers to a lesser degree seem to be able to hold onto top form the longest: up thru 9 for some rare specimens. Turf routers seem to last for quite a while also; Other router categories less so. Just watch the speed figures, realize they all have peaks and valleys, but the peaks are further apart in time as they get older. And they may need a bit more rest as they get older.
