I’m curious as to why you find this interesting. No really, I’m genuinely curious. One of the games core tenants was to make friends. I get that some folks wouldn’t be inclined to reach out to other players for many reasons however, saying hello, being nice, showing empathy, being charitable etc. are why people feel welcome _ and _ these characteristics are what many players value. Competition is key but having fun and making friends is why players stick around.
While I think the game can be rewarding for those who engage in the social aspect of it, it's not a requirement. People can play how they choose, and for many that's keeping their nose to the ground and just doing their own thing. Your definition of fun isn't going to be someone else's definition of fun.

Here's why I find it interesting. Based on the responses it seems that for an overwhelming majority of players having to ask permission to use a stallion puts them in an uncomfortable enough position that they'd rather just not do it. Despite that, this is a trend that's still continuing and I question how healthy that is for the game.

For me if a stud is closed by the owner for their own personal reasons, be it to save the population from overbreeding or to spread the love, whatever the case is, I just look for another stud.

If I try again to use that same stud and still see the same issue I will just avoid that stud until pensioned, no need to give that owner the benefit of sending my good mares and making their stud look even better when they are handling their stud in this special way. It honestly just leaves a bad taste.

When a stud is in high demand, the stud fees collected for the additional 30 slots will bring in enough to cover the exchange rate from sim cash to GP and give the stud owner a very hefty profit.

I just don’t feel that I should have to ask permission to pay you money to use your stud, but to each their own.

Thanks Danny and Pietro for your responses. I understand. Because SIM is an ever evolving living organism and we are fortunate enough to have management who listens so that everyone feels like we are being heard; would you two be open to the following compromise?

Four new stallion selection buttons by the owner to select a limit of 2,5,10 or unlimited stallion slots per player per SIM year?

I'm not really expecting management to make any changes based on any of the feedback in here. We as players already have all the tools we need to manage stallions. I don't think it's difficult to do it in a way that keeps a stallion always available while still not depriving people the chance to breed to them if they want to - I'm sure you already know my philosophy on how to do it. That said, it's up to each person to do whatever they want with their stallions.

I think this is interesting, but I need to put some time into thinking about it. I would have liked this with devon castle maybe as a way to spread his availability out at the start of the year, although I would have wanted to open him up wider toward the end of the season if there were spots left over. I think I posted somewhere or sometime about selling syndicate shares, where I could sell to another player like 5 guaranteed breedings per year for the remaining life of a stallion - partly because I thought that might get some money up front while a young stallion was 'hot' and before he had quality sons to compete with, and because that could travel with him if I leased him out. As a breeder I'd like that so I know I can always get my mares into my most favorite studs even at the end of the year. I know we can 'reserve' breedings for specific players and for different fees now, but at 500gp a slot I'm not sensing much interest. I don't have a 'sell out' stud atm (although King of Stars and Most Spirited have both sold out in prior years), so maybe that is popular with the likes of Storm, DMB, etc.

Me 3.

But limits have barely affected me other than the VERY rare stallion like DMB. That said, one time Summerland was accidentally blocked out (when bookings first came out) and I got a better foal from a different stallion than I got from him from the same mare in a different year. So its not always a bad thing to be "forced" to look elsewhere (even though I could have messaged Nena and probably would have if it wasn't my first foal of the year that I wanted to breed RIGHT then). I also actively choose to try to make my major horses outcrosses. I'm more likely to use those "super" sires for a bad mare with a backclass pedigree than one of my best mares. Because I know that in 10 years I'll be screaming at the screen when I try to breed them and everything is related. So there are definite positives to the stallion limits for me personally.

I don't usually message people for spots because usually when I'm breeding I have time to be breeding RIGHT THEN and I don't want to forget why I selected a cross and what gender I wanted for my breeding program.

I think the problem with setting a limit on how many a player can breed is not all players have the same amount of mares or I would just have new players breed 10 mares for me to a stud and pay them to do it sort of thing so many ways to work around that .

I will just put it out there if you personally don’t want me or any other player to use your studs just let me know I don’t need to give anyone in this game my sim money that bad .

Also if any player out there with a DS stud wants to be used by a fleet of my mares send me a in game message !

I feel that JX was trying to do was something special and cool but Laura restrictions on her studs to me is beyond Manipulative to breeders and she is just trying to keep her queen bee and I am perfect status and this may be because I for one bred 150 mares one year to WOG (more slots were added to him ) or some players would fill a stud book on the year turn over but since that happened slots were added .

We are all free to play this game in any style we want and even if I don’t agree with how Laura is playing with her studs she is free to do so but I don’t think we need any more rules or options when it comes to stud control .

Maybe the answer to the stud dilemma is set the number of foals to 200 tops and have the set reserve level cap at 50 that a player can manipulate any way they want and other then that the player can just set high stud fee that is also come with a cap of say 200k so that it super expensive but still not Ludacris like 1 mill a foal

I say this with a smile, but Xander, no one has the right to tell the stud owner how many slots they can reserve for themselves. It’s a part of playing your own game how you want to, not how people pressure you to.

Personally, while I don’t have a DMB caliber stallion, but I don’t think I’d keep opening more slots.

A stud owner has the power to put there stud on the market when ever they want so in a sense they can wait to some random time or week and technically save all the slots for themselves if they truly want to use a stud for themselves Mary

I remember being deeply hurt (years and years and years ago) when someone I cared about said something offhand that made feeling stupid for raising a stud fee to a highly popular stallion back in the day before breeding caps existed, etc.

Be careful what you say everyone, there's a person behind each of these horses is all I'm trying to remind us of.

It's ultimately up to the stallion owner to do what they like, the world be damned. Demand/supply will show if choices made were good or bad, but good or bad is also ultimately all about perspective isn't it?

Meh, I guess in summary my recommendation is try not to stress about it and just have a good time. It's what we're here for, right? Message if you want, wait if you want, or move on to the next stud if you want. It's ultimately really up to you.
