Best crappy mare?

Post by Shannon Hunt »

I sometimes see cases of very successful (i.e. multimillionaire) racing fillies retire and get a "star" BSA comment, though they seem to produce just fine anyway... also seen fantastic race mares go on to only produce foals who are not even a little bit like their dams (Love Won't Roam comes to mind, great runner whose production record enabled me to pick up two of her foals and subsequently cull them both from my own barn; I've seen many other similar examples), though I have no idea what BSA such mares had.

This got me thinking a bit, so, I'm curious to see some examples of really, really nice runners whose BSA comment is comparatively crap - i.e. formidable or lower (not hens who failed to live up to their comments, or two-time listed stakes winners who retired meh, or millionaires who are "only" star - I mean absolute is-this-uterus-even-attached-to-this-runner type mares) . Do unpredictable millionaire mares exist?

Note, this is not to rag on any horses, I have great respect for pretty runners regardless of their mothering abilities (or do rag on your own frustrating mares, if you like, I won't stop you :) ) I'm just really curious to see how common it is for champ mares to be less than hen/star, my assumption was that runs great=BSAs great but I hear that is not the case!

She Sleeps Forever Formidable DS
I paid an arm and leg for this girl Y44. Her only nice foal came from the steward when she leased her one season.

Merry and Bright is a millionaire unpredictable. She's produced 4 claimers, 1 solid, 1 productive and 2 allowance, but neither of those allowance foals (or any of her foals for that matter) have ever actually won an allowance race, or even a maiden special weight, much less a stakes race. A noninsignificant number of my stewardbreds have been unpredictable after nice careers on the track.

Turn to Gold was formidable, claimer, solid, productive

And my namesake Elise was formidable 2 claimers, 2 solids and a productive

I'm sure I could find a lot more in my pasture lol

Double Fluff
A very favorite AW Router that beat all ages and sexes, and made a good living in her time. The ONLY horse I ever paid 20 K just to keep her ' alive ' after her last foal. Retired to unpredictable and never came close to reproducing herself, best being an allowance she produced for someone else.
(Still love her tho)

This one is nearing death of old age and still makes me angry. Formidable. Produced 3 allowance gallopers and nothing else: https://www.simhorseracing.com/horse.php?HorseID=372982
