Remember the sad ‘Wows”

Post by Andrea Bouwkamp »

Now we have the sad Freaks. At least in my observation anyways in certain divisions of course.

TBs
Turf milers are legit.

I have never had a freak Turf router so I can’t comment on these, same with dirt sprinters.

Dirt routers. Freaks are not a guarantee of anything except a lower stakes race. Stakes horses are lucky to win an allowance and most are higher level claimers.

Chasers
Freaks can barely get stakes wins. I have at least 10 of them that can barely get through their conditions. I have one maiden that is going for her 10th attempt to get a win.

Arabian Routers
See my comments about chasers. Exactly the same.
I now run a ton of Arabian stakes in high level claimers.

Arabian sprinters is comparable to the turf milers IMO. Honest division.

STBP.

Exactly the same as Dirt routers.

This is just some of the observations I have noticed since the change.
When I get a freak in the above mentioned hard groups, I’m like “Meh”. Lol

Crayon is, and have always been a stakes, and has still won The Steward's Cup and the Saudi Cup despite being a stakes. So stake runners are no lost cause in the dirt router division ;) There is hope.

Then there's turf sprint where getting a stakes is more exciting than getting a freak in other divisions. Stakes actually means stakes. I still get excited about freaks in the "tough divisions," but the day I get a freak turf sprinter, I'm gonna go nuts. Thanks to Laura Smith for getting me into the division.

So true! I can’t believe I forgot about the turf sprint division, by far my most successful non steeplechase TB stock.
I actually get excited about allowance TSers. They consistently earn a paycheck.

I'm currently feeling the pain of the Arabian Router and Steeplechasing situations lol this colt is one of the fastest all-time 6F workouts, yet doesn't seem to wanna run. Granted, I haven't been the kindest to him, but shouldn't one of the fastest ever be capable of winning an age-restricted Sponsored Stakes?

Another fun TB DR aside.. I think I recall Eric saying that Deputy Dog is rated "Stakes" and she, like Crayon, has seen a lot of success.
Heart is a factor that each SIM horse has, and it's something that we cannot see or test for. I firmly believe that it plays a large role in how horses perform, and if they don't have heart, it doesn't necessarily matter what their gallop rating is.
I think Baby Shark Doo Doo likely had a high level of Heart because she, too, was a Stakes (and is really nothing special pedigree-wise) and seemed to run beyond what made sense.

I've had a T-bred dirt route freak that let me down quite a bit. He still won some races, but hasn't really blown the doors off of anything. In spite of that, I'm still running him in the Marathon tonight, maybe Aloft will have flash of freak at some point in time and actually win a big purse GI. :P

I can't really remember having a T-bred turfy freak let me down, so I'm pretty happy about that. And too, with my turf T-breds, I've had a good number of stakes type routers that were good enough to compete shoulder to shoulder with freaks. Mal, was one of them, he was a stakes type.

However... I have had some T-bred turf stakes types that didn't really fire, struggled to compete in non-graded stakes. So, while I get pretty excited in seeing a Freak T-bred in my barn, the stakes types..I just have a wait and see attitude about them.

Mixers  : (
I have So Many various types of freak mixers - none of which couldn't even outrun an old fat dog I had called Ernie and he couldn't out run a snail.
I never get excited about freaks in any division of the mixers...especially trotters ....it's mostly a joke, in my experience - and most of the time the stakes runners are inconsistent too.

I have had a few mixer freaks do well...and yet, one of those totally burned out by age 3. Still, as a 2 year old she managed to win over a million dollars.

And I had a freak QH that did well on the track, but was a total dud in the stallion barn, even though he was a nice freak racer and had a good pedigree...ditto that story with a freak trotter I have.
I don't think I've ever been completely happy with any of my freak mixers.

I cut Way back on my mixer numbers due that reason, just got tired of having my hopes raised over a freak, .

Is there a way to learn about the placement of horses in the various divisions other than by experience and guessing based on speed figures? Have articles or whatever been written?

I do fine with some divisions but in others, chasers especially, I am not doing well finding my horse's spots. Even just this post is helpful....is there more where this came from?

I beg to differ. Pay the Reckoning and Black Moon Glow are/were both stakes/peak gallopers in TS. They're pretty awful, as have been every stakes TS I've had for years.

I will agree that DR and Standardbred freaks are frequently utterly useless. I have quite a few of those that I was once excited about that are ready to hit the claiming ranks.

TM is definitely not the division it was 10 game years ago. And with 1st class shipping it’s been easy for a handful of horses to dominate the big races

This is probably the saddest freak I've ever seen. I claimed him for $5,000 from Greg Czechowicz, who bought him for a dollar: https://www.simhorseracing.com/horse.ph ... ID=1142834

-Galloped freak in Y53, stakes in Y54, and freak again by Y55 end. Galloped freak all the way up to Y58 preseason but hasn't been checked since. Probably won't say "freak" anymore I'm guessing
-Never stakes placed
-Won two non-claiming conditioned races and a maiden, three other wins in claimers
-In a claimer by the start of his second year (started at four years old for some reason)
-At the $5,000 claiming level by the end of his third year

I read the subject line and remember fondly racing many sad "wows" over in Japan battling people like Lee Cara and everyone else's sad "wows."
