I read the by-laws and they state that if you quit playing one more time you forfeit your silks.

"There's nothing better than a freak in the shed."

"Uh, I much prefer the bedroom, sweetie."

I had to chuckle. I didn't even know my wife was behind me.

"No, for once I didn't mean what you thought I meant. A few of my old racing friends found out I was back in the game and are being rather generous. You remember Nick Gilmore?"

"Isn't she the one you thought was a man? The only thing she should give you is a slap."

"Fair point. Anyway, she has a four-year-old colt who supposedly is a freak — that means really fast — but isn't performing like it. She wants me to try to figure him out. I personally think he wants 9 furlongs, so that's what I'm going to try."

"And if that doesn't work?"

"Well, then I will have my hands full. Oh by the way, we also have a pair of mares in the breeding shed now, too, courtesy of Karl Smythe. He also gave me a third mare who's still racing — a stakes winner and I think she still has something left in the tank."

"Great. You have any more friends? We might have to build another shed."

Quick question: Have auctions reverted back to the way they worked when I started in Year 41? When I left you could submit a bid, and if it was higher than any previous bid, it would show your bid as the highest, but also at the lowest amount you could win the horse for. Now it looks like that has been done away with and your bid is simply your bid again (meaning deadline snipes are back in force).

I don't care either way, but just want to know.

No proxy bidding still exists, however the owner of the auction can choose whether to have proxy bidding on or not.

Did you enter it in the wrong box? The top box is current bid. Bottom box is max bid or your proxy

"Are you up for a three-day getaway?"

"Always am. Where we going?"

"Louisville."

"Holy cow. Louisville Downs?!?"

"Close. Henderson Park."

"Oh. Never heard of it. Louisville is lovely, though. You got a horse running?"

"Not just running, but in a stakes race — specifically the Shaconage Stakes. It's a minor stakes race but it seems like the perfect outing for a lady to love."

"Aww, thank you, dear."

"... Uh ... Well, you ARE a lady to love, but A Lady to Love is the name of the mare I'm running. She just took down a Grade 2 two races ago. Want to know the best thing about her?"

"Not like I could stop you ..."

"I bred her. She was auctioned off as a yearling when I stepped away, but Karl Smythe gave her back to me."

"I remember Karl. Great guy."

"So, we're going out tonight. We need to find you that nice new dress."

"So which of these beautiful animals is ours, dear?"

"A Lady to Love is wearing the 5. It means she's starting in the No. 5 post."

"The black one there? Wow, she's really nice! I hope she runs as well as she looks!"

"She certainly won't run as well as you look, sweetie."

"There they go! How long is this race?"

"Nine furlongs."

"Furlongs?"

"Sorry, horse racing terms. A furlong is an eighth of a mile. This race is 1 1/8 miles. It's once around the track, plus this little bit they just did in front of us."

"She's not doing very well, dear."

"She's a closer, so she will run most of the race at the back of the field."

"Isn't that a bad thing?"

"Not necessarily. With closers, the hope is there will be some pace up at the front and those horses will tire out, allowing the closers — like our girl — to rally and take the lead down the stretch."

"They're going to have to tire a lot. She's already 12, maybe 13 lengths back."

"It's not unheard of. Some horses like to start fast — they're called speed horses — and some horses can be as far as 20 or more lengths back and then come charging. Things are about to pick up, they're in the far turn."

"She's going to have to move soon, she's still got 10 lengths to make up."

"Melanie is getting her revved up."

"Here we go! This is exciting! ... Um ... She's not really improving ... Come on! ... Oh ... What happened?"

(Awkward silence.)

"She finished sixth."

"She finished last."

"That, too."

"Do we win anything for that?"

(Awkward silence.)

"Let's see what's for dessert."
