"You need to get back in the game."

My wife has a habit of saying things that cause me whiplash.

"You sure?"

"Hey, I love you being around more, helping out with the kids, having you as a sous chef, even providing your seriously incorrect and ill-informed opinion on my favorite movies and TV series."

"You're dead wrong about those four new Gilmore Girls episodes. Those were inarguably awful."

She shrugged. Then she did what she always does when serious. She repeated herself.

"You need to get back in the game."

"I don't know," I admitted. "You know me. I can't go more than a couple of years keeping my interest in anything."

"You kept your interest in me."

"Yeah, well you're hotter than any horse I ever trained."

"Look," she said. "We both know you miss the puzzle. You miss trying to take horses who have underperformed and attempting to figure them out. Half the time you wander around this house aimlessly, without any sense of purpose or passion. We both know what your purpose and passion is. So get back out there. Claim a horse or two or 10. Tackle the challenge. See what happens."

"I don't know."

"Just think about it." Then she headed out the door.

That was a half-hour ago. Long enough to think enough.

"Guess I should check out the claiming race entries."

Fictional account. Not to say she doesn't have good sense, but she married me, so ...

"What's that?"

My wife is used to me having my head hidden by a newspaper. Regular paper — or in this case a stapled stack of paper — is different.

"Adoption papers."

"What?!?"

I chuckled. She has never understood my sense of humor. Her loss.

"I'm back to fixing things."

"Horses?"

"I hope. If I get to the track and they're donkeys, I'm going to be quite put out."

"Oooooh, Princess Bride reference. We need to watch that again."

"Didn't we watch it two weeks ago?"

"You can never watch Princess Bride enough."

"True."

"Wait a minute ... you already own horses? That soon?"

"Claimed five last night."

"Holy crap! What did you do, bolt to the computer the instant I left for Bible study?"

"Nah. I waited a half-hour."

"So essentially, yes. So who are we the proud new owners of?"

"All five have potential ..."

"You wouldn't have claimed them otherwise."

"Yeah. ... Satono Grad is a four-time stakes winner, including at the start of this year, and is only 4. I have some hopes for him. Never know with geldings, they can run great into the double digits. I'm not even sure I have to do any fixing with him."

"I just realized I'm going to have to shop for some nicer clothes for the track."

"You're gorgeous in rags. In fact, you're REALLY gorgeous in nothing at all."

"Geez, you're as randy as the studs we used to breed. What other gems did you find?"

"Bird in a Sedan is a juvy colt, decent top workout, likely to improve ... thought that was worth a shot. I'm pretty surprised my claim wasn't contested. You remember Gigi Gofaster? She grabbed the winner and second place. Bird in a Sedan was third."

"She seems to know more than you do. And there's no way that's her original last name."

"Yes, and probably not. King of Intention is a 3-year-old gelding with a decent top workout, hasn't shown a ton on the track yet but did win last night. I took a gamble on him."

"Was it a gut feeling?"

"I suppose."

"Your gut feelings never work out."

"I had a gut feeling when I proposed to you."

"That was a testicular feeling."

"Yeah, well, same neighborhood. Summer Songs is the one I really want to see if he has more left. Five-year-old gelding, has a sub-58 workout, eight wins in 18 starts but never a stakes win ... wait ... never even run in a stakes. That's interesting. Well, that's going to change. He won with an 89 last out."

"What's an 89?"

I paused trying to come up with some lame joke, then abandoned the thought. "Speed figure. Maxes out at 100. Anything in the 90s is elite. 89 is pretty darn close."

"So you think Summer Songs can race at that level?"

"Hard to say. Some horses run great against lesser competition but just don't handle tougher fields. He's also a speed horse so if he doesn't get the lead early he's not going to like it."

"You said you claimed five. Who's left?"

"There's a Ghost."

"Stop it. You know I don't believe in ghosts."

"No, that's the horse's name. Three-year-old gelding. Consistently solid but hasn't shown top-end ability. Workouts show the same thing — Quality racer, lacking top-end talent. But again, he's three. Lots of racing to come. Just never know."

She smiled at me.

"I can already see you're excited."

"You were right. I need the challenge. But claiming them is the easy part. Training them and getting them to max out ... well ... the work is only beginning."

You've been gone too long, Dan.

Speed figures can now go over 100 : )

This guy just topped the SF rating with a 108 in his last race.

Loving your comments, and hope you can do a few articles too, especially around SC week

Thanks for the heads-up on speed figures. Doesn't look like 100+ figures happen very often in the TR scene ... only a handful of 102s and 101s.

I plan on sticking solely to TR and probably won't be writing many articles, in all honesty. I don't want to risk a serious burnout case again.

Tracking all those G1 winners looked like a major chore. Hopefully you won't burn outfor a long time to come.
