Gallop Adjustments-How Have You Found Them So Far?

Post by Carole Hanson »

I have to say from my own barn, the allowance horses seem to be more up to their level now, and the stakes are doing somewhat better too (obviously that's because my race placement is now more reflective of their ability). But I find my freaks are definitely not running like freaks and the majority are being totally outran by Stakes in my barn, even when I put them in at similar levels (Grade 2-Grade 2 etc.)

Anyone have any thoughts or findings thus far?

Mine are still all running terribly. 🤷‍♀️ Feel free to give advice because some days I wonder why I’m torturing myself😅

For example: Yeet
Born a stakes LB, peaked stakes Y61 Preseason, improved to freak peak Y61 mid year, stayed freak peak after the adjustment.

My “Conditions Barn” horses because they don’t win stakes

It must depend on what divisions we compete in. My freak dirt milers are my biggest money earners, from there down my stakes and allowance gallopers intermingle on the list pretty quickly. Productive gallops earn much better than solid on down.

I haven't sat down and really looked at it, but I feel like my dirt sprinters are running pretty true to their rating.

In mixers, 4 of my 5 freaks (three STBT, 1 paint sprinter) have won at least one stakes race this season. The fifth one is a trotter that has always been good-but-not-great. Stakes mixers are ranging from stakes winners to claimer grinders, but overall I feel allowance runners are (mostly) holding their own better, and in a couple of divisions some productives can earn their keep without being absurdly careful about just running fillers.

Anyway, nobody cares about mixers, so onwards to TBs. In terms of freaks, we have no freaks. They got dusted in the adjustment snap.

Of four ex-freaks turned stakes, one is a G1 winner this year; one showed promise last year with strong stakes finishes (no wins, but was racing second against horses like Battleships and Gadot, beat some other nice horses on the way) but is now in the doghouse and probably burned out with zero confidence; two are also probably burned out - one hasn't won stakes in several seasons though places frequently and is getting a barrier trial, other has a good stakes shot this week but is otherwise going barrier if she faceplants again. Divisions are TR, DR, AWS, and TR, respectively.

Of the other 12 that either stayed stakes or graduated to stakes over the break, 7 are stakes winners at some point in their careers and a few of them have won a stakes this year. A couple of those might admittedly be lucky allowances now, I haven't regalloped them but they've never posted astounding speed figures even in stakes wins. Of the other 5 who haven't won a stakes, a couple are stakes placed and allowance competitive, a couple are really just grinding NW2s and waiting for me to figure out what they want I guess. Those 12 represent DS, DM, DR, TR, and TM/TS vers (stakes winners in all of those). The strugglers are either straight DR or DM/DR versatile.

In general I think the comments give a much better estimate of potential ability now. Allowances are useful almost across the board in my barn, and I run most productives profitably enough to be worth keeping while I have time to enter them. There will always be some horse who has talent but just hates running, or hates the distances I pick for it, but I feel like the complete nonsense comments are much fewer and further between.

Except for this horse. It's a good thing maiden purses are high because this is the most miserable allowance I might have ever owned.
