Curious about the composition of barns

Post by Kelly Haggerty »

I know we will have a mix across the SIM, but the barn size post awhile back got me wondering about racing barn gallop composition. Curious.

In my racing barn, I have 52% stakes+ gallopers, but a fair few of the lower end 2yos I won't race (yet), waiting to see if they improve.

If we're only counting older horses, then the % is 73.7%

I have 14.1% Stakes or higher (including Mixers) in my racing barn
Just TBs is 14% so clearly my mixers mean little LOL

Mixer barn, but I'll play

34 total horses in my racing barn:
6 Productives (all fillies who will not race, they're broodmare prospects I'm just protecting from random injury)
3 Allowance (all of which are for sale and running lowest claimers)
16 Stakes
9 Freaks
From the total numbers, 73.5% are Stakes/Freak
From actually racing numbers, 89.3% are Stakes/Freak
Obviously I have a very small and select racing barn as I focus primarily on breeding which I absolutely love

In the past few years....the composite of my barn has been pretty much what horses produce while standing in the their stalls.

No freaks, very few stakes....can only hope the late bloomer and progressive allowance types jump up...or I get a few surprise jumps with some claimer late bloomer and progressive types. That has happened before in my barn...had a mare go from claimer to stakes to freak once. :P

I've also had slumps like that where for several years, my best mares produced crappy foals in spite of sending them to proven stallions that did well with them in the past, and trying out newer stallions that got A, A- hypomates with them.

I can only hope that kind of like the last slump I went through that lasted a few Sim years... I'll end up with a string of great horses again, as I did when Roughian, Mal, and Malcontent broke that slump : )

This is 3yo+, I normally give 2yos 3/4 starts no matter the gallop before I chuck them and most often..its stakes+ that get to stay.

47 3yo+
23% stakes+

Rest I'm either waiting to peak or they are getting chucked out soon

If I count "peak" only, it's 48.75% (because I pretty much immediately get rid of anything below allowance, and most allowances don't last long). All counted, under 25%.

I can safely say, though, that a good chunk of those "stakes" actually race in claimers.

I answered the poll thinking it meant whole racing barn, which would be around 13%. Actively racing would be around 42%.

Actively racing aka 3yo plus are all stakes and freaks (but that’s only 17 horses)
The rest of the total number in my racing barn are 2yos (bringing total up to 42). There’s one productive LB, 8 allowance and the rest are stakes or freaks

I've got 130 in my active racers barn. 87 of those are Stakes, 37 are Freaks.

I've got a larger cohort of horses which galloped below those levels, but I have an assistant who manages those with the sole purpose of looking for improvers.

Of my 3yo+ racers I've worked them out to 7.5%.
I race everything I breed for a little while at least, until I realize my barn is too big to easily manage, so plenty of claimers and solids to irritate me and skewer everything.
