Stakes Colts W/Longer Career Comment?
Just out of curiosity, has anyone retired a "Stakes" level colt with the Longer Career comment and had him nick well/have decent yearling gallop results?
I ask because I have two Dirt Route TBS Select colts who are Stakes Longer Career, and i'm trying to figure out if they're even worth my time. Last night, I retired a Freak Longer Career with nicer bloodlines than either of these TBS colts, and he is AWFUL. Surely my two colts were in the Select auction for a reason though?
While I love the new gallop comments, I also find them a little discouraging. Now I feel like all of my "longer career" horses aren't worth my time.
The colts, for anyone curious:

If you spend $10M on a horse itโs probably worth your time.
Just ignore the new comments, theyโre useless as far as I can tell.

I wouldnโt overthink it. And if it says try a longer career; you might as well give them a chance at 4 for sure and maybe 5. My guess is both of these horses want more distance as well, so at least wait until theyโve had that option to show themselves before you decide on sticking with them or not as potential studs.
"I was afraid of Gigi, it was true." Oh yes. Be afraid. Be very afraid...

Thank you all for the input, I appreciate it <3
Re: Stakes Colts W/Longer Career Comment?
I am hoping 'longer career' is related to longevity ie ability to race at close to best level for a longer time than usual vs some of these horses that fizzle out by the time they are four. But who knows unless the steward confirms. I know I asked for this in past 'one small thing' because I personally like to race them as long as possible but dont want to ruin their gender appeal fo breeding by running them too long past their prime.

I have not heard of any stallion with the LC comment that nicked well. But I do not expect that someone would mention the LC comment when they were promoting their stallion.Lily Wilkins wrote: โ1 year ago Just out of curiosity, has anyone retired a "Stakes" level colt with the Longer Career (LC) comment and had him nick well/have decent yearling gallop results?
Has anyone had a recently retired Blue Hen mare that had the LC comment? My retired LC mares have all been rated Formidable or lower but they were all Allowance and Productive gallopers. Hopefully, when I retire my Freak and Stakes LC fillies, they fare better than Formidable. In any case, I plan on them having Longer Careers as racing horses.

Wildness was a longer career freak. His breeding number must have only been one point lower than his racing number though because he hypos like a beast. His yearlings didnโt gallop freak but he has an absurd number of stakes, many of which I suspect are late bloomers who will be freaks by the time they turn 3.
That said, I had a breeding shed stakes with pedigree up to his eyeballs. Sponsored and slogged my way to getting him to 350k. He was so dreadful with his hypos that I ended up AJing him on the spot.

Moon On Fire is similar to Wildness, longer career freak turned great hypos and gallops.
Honour Among Thieves is a breeding shed freak that has a suspect pedigree but he hypos as good as Kryptonite and has decent first season stats.

Re: Stakes Colts W/Longer Career Comment?
I don't have any stakes longer career retirees yet, but I tend to geld most of my boys. I'm not working with top breeding stock in the first place, so my attitude is it's better to get a tiny bonus from gelding than nothing at all. I have a stakes longer career yearling with a good pedigree and I've left him whole "just in case". I'll try to get him to 350k (more if he can earn it) and nick him with my mares before paying to make him a stud.Lily Wilkins wrote: โ1 year ago Just out of curiosity, has anyone retired a "Stakes" level colt with the Longer Career comment and had him nick well/have decent yearling gallop results?
So my answer is to treat "stakes longer career" like the long-standing advice from before we had these gallop comments. Race them till they stop earning, nick them with your mares, and make your final decision then. Also, get them to 350k (which means racing them for a few more seasons). They already have a small hit by having less breeding points than racing points, you probably don't want to further stifle their future breeding potential by retiring them with 20k in earnings.
If you're feeling really frustrated, you could always buy some time by leasing them out. Let someone else race them for the rest of the season and take stock then. You could even consider leasing them to second season newbies at Trial Park. They'd be likely to pick up some stakes wins (padding their earnings) and you'd make new friends.

This filly was an allowance with the longer career comment and she ended up being a blue hen. I'm personally not taking the comments too seriously anymore.Ronnie Dee wrote: โ1 year ago Has anyone had a recently retired Blue Hen mare that had the LC comment? I don't have the new gallop comments on most of my retired mares, but I played around to get it on a few before they retired last year and I do have one paint mare with that comment that was originally an allowance/late bloomer but eventually a stakes/peak mare that was a blue hen upon retirement.Ronnie Dee wrote: โ1 year ago Has anyone had a recently retired Blue Hen mare that had the LC comment? Re: Stakes Colts W/Longer Career Comment?
I retired a stakes peak stud last year (non TB) he was longer career.. raced his best at 5 and 6 years old. Winning against the best of his breed etc. and he retired to hypo a lot of A+ and got a stakes in his first crop and lots of improving allowance. So I am no longer taking this longer career to mean that all my colts that say this will not be stud worthy.

Re: Stakes Colts W/Longer Career Comment?
This one started out allowance LB and then wound up stakes peak last year. She had the longer career comment; I kept her on track long enough to get her to 100K and just retired her this morning to find she's a blue hen. Haven't hypo'd her with anything but the stud I wanted to breed her to, though, as I'm lacking in GPs at the moment.Ronnie Dee wrote: โ1 year ago Has anyone had a recently retired Blue Hen mare that had the LC comment?
