For some SIM players, the American Triple Crown series of races are one of the most exciting races on the calendar. For other SIM players, not so much.

There is still time to enter a colt or a filly in the Year 64 Louisville Derby.

Way back when, I remember newspapers (do you remember newspapers?) that carried a feature during the run up to the Kentucky Derby called, Why He (She) Can Win and Why He (She) Won't Win. It was fun and interesting for me to read during the Derby week hype.

Exist: intransitive verb, To have actual being; be real.To have life; live.To live at a minimal level; subsist.

Why he can win. Close to the pace runner with a best BSF (100) of my 3 derby entrants.
Why he won't win. Lost to buzzsaw speedster, Warder in Cali last out.

Prize: transitive verb, To value highly; esteem or treasure. synonym: appreciate. To estimate the worth of; evaluate.

Why he can win. Front runner woke up in New York last out over a very talented colt, Cozmic. Distance capabilities from Dave Matthews Band a plus.
Why he won't win. Trainer Xett has not trained a Louisville Derby winner in 35 years. Dam, Adelie, may have distance limitations.

Magical: adjective, Of, relating to, or produced by magic. Enchanting; bewitching. Facetiously, as if by magic.
Why he can win. Showed maturity racing against top tier runners in 4 prior stakes races. Last race, Gr. 1 winner of the Kentucky Blue Stakes.
Why he won't win. Bounce candidate? Unheralded sire Kentucky Trophy has the pedigree for the classic distance (Mr. Wonderful-So Right) but is unproven.

Congratulations in advance to all the owners/trainers/breeders with an entry in the prestigious Year 64 Louisville Derby - jX

Nice article Jon. I worked for a time at our local paper, when it actually was such a thing.

Had a paper route as a kid. With bags strung across the handlebars of my bike.

Ryhka will win because I picked him.

And will lose for the same reason.

Best of luck to all in the biggest race the SIM has to offer (IMO) :)

I suspected that if you bet on the GOAT, "The Babe", AKA Laura Ferguson, you would do do quite well in the Derby -- but maybe it was just selective memory on my part as she won last year's Derby. So I looked at the last 25 Derbies.

Last 25 Derbies (return on $100 bet)
Y39 11th
Y40 no entry
Y41 1st ($74,907), 12th
Y42 11th
Y43 no entry
Y44 no entry
Y45 no entry
Y46 2nd -- lost by nck
Y47 none
Y48 no entry
Y49 4th
Y50 no entry
Y51 no entry
Y52 no entry
Y53 19th
Y54 2nd -- lost by nck
Y55 no entry
Y56 1st ($3,343), 7th
Y57 9th, 13th
Y58 7th
Y59 19th
Y60 6th
Y61 13th
Y62 13th
Y63 1st ($858)

18 runners ($1,800 bet): 3 winners returning $74,907, $3,343, and $858 = $79,108
If you omit the monster payout, you still would get a return of $4,201
But she also lost 2 photo finishes so with better luck she could have had 2 more winners -- that is, 5 winners in 25 years!
Great Stallions at Great Prices -- Stud Fee of only $12,500 each

Hero Morgan
5 furlong specialist extraordinaire!

Bennie and the Jets
SC AW Classic (twice) and Pegasus Winner

Mage
Versatile (AR/DR/TR and AM/DM/TM) RL stallion

Dr. Hinede Hacklu Says: 'This horse looks absolutely fine to me! Good luck this week!"
I bet ol' Dr. H. says that about all 17 Derby entrants.
Will the pill-pull for post positions be televised?
