Re: BIG mistake.....
I worked my 4 sprinting yearlings just because, even though there were the warnings, and seem to got by ok, and even got pleasantly surprised with a 22.30 work.

Re: BIG mistake.....
out of 8 yearlings, i have 3 injured. two with hoof abcesses and one with body soreness. great start, putting it down to experience so i know not to work them next year till late on. These are my first set of homebreds coming through.
all worked four furlongs turf bar Glasvegas who is a dirt filly:-
A Better Day (dkb gelding) - 0:49:39
Atlantic Flyer (bl filly) - 0:48:76 (now off with body soreness)
Bring 'em On (dkb filly) - 0:49:63 (now off with a hoof abcess)
Crackling (b filly) - 0:49:59
Doesn't Time Fly (b filly) - 0:48:84
Glasvegas - dirt - (bl filly) - 0:47:92
Powerade (dkb colt) - 0:48:72 (now off with a hoof abcess)
White Bird (dkb colt) - 0:48:40
does anybody know if injuries affect the horses' ability when they hit the track?

It makes them more prone to injury again than a horse who was never injured.Global Stars Racing wrote:does anybody know if injuries affect the horses' ability when they hit the track?

Re: BIG mistake.....
I look at it this way - I can get a yearling ready to race Week 1 of its 2yo year by working it Week 9 and Week 13. For routers or horses debuting Weeks 2/3/4/etc. that schedule is even more relaxed. Other than some sort of "early" gratification which you'd eventually get Week 9 ANYWAY, there's very little to be gained (and a lot to potentially be lost) by hitting that button anytime before Week 9. And my net gratification is ultimately higher for it since I don't break half my babies.

Re: BIG mistake.....
I agree with Tim. Waiting for Week 4 is prudent. I have never heard of any yearling being injured in Week 4 from a 2 furlong workout.
I disagree with Eric. Workouts provide valuable information about a horse's ability. Since a horse's workout time has variability, multiple workouts reduce the uncertainty in this information.

Re: BIG mistake.....
The only time I really go with more than 2 workouts is if I'm not sure which surface a horse might like best. With some horses being morning glories, and other ones saving their stuff for the pm (and I've had both), while it is gratifying to get the instant boost of a fast work, I really don't take too much stock in them in terms of rating my yearlings or deciding what the best distance is for them. Other than the surface issue, I view workouts as more of a conditioning tool than a source of information. Like Eric, I tend to wait until later in the year to work my yearlings, even those bred to be sprinters.
Just my two cents' worth,

Re: BIG mistake.....
I thought that there was a thread around about the higher injury rate working earlier. I don't understand why the need is there to work RIGHT NOW! there is a lot to do.
People have been talking a lot about the injuries that occur by working early a lot lately, at least in the chat. I don't do any works before week 4.
