I worked my 4 sprinting yearlings just because, even though there were the warnings, and seem to got by ok, and even got pleasantly surprised with a 22.30 work.

It makes them more prone to injury again than a horse who was never injured.

I just worked one of my yearling arabs on accident (I swore she was 2) and she bruised her hoof. I feel bad now. :/

I look at it this way - I can get a yearling ready to race Week 1 of its 2yo year by working it Week 9 and Week 13. For routers or horses debuting Weeks 2/3/4/etc. that schedule is even more relaxed. Other than some sort of "early" gratification which you'd eventually get Week 9 ANYWAY, there's very little to be gained (and a lot to potentially be lost) by hitting that button anytime before Week 9. And my net gratification is ultimately higher for it since I don't break half my babies.

Patience... it's still a virtue.

I agree with Tim. Waiting for Week 4 is prudent. I have never heard of any yearling being injured in Week 4 from a 2 furlong workout.

I disagree with Eric. Workouts provide valuable information about a horse's ability. Since a horse's workout time has variability, multiple workouts reduce the uncertainty in this information.

The only time I really go with more than 2 workouts is if I'm not sure which surface a horse might like best. With some horses being morning glories, and other ones saving their stuff for the pm (and I've had both), while it is gratifying to get the instant boost of a fast work, I really don't take too much stock in them in terms of rating my yearlings or deciding what the best distance is for them. Other than the surface issue, I view workouts as more of a conditioning tool than a source of information. Like Eric, I tend to wait until later in the year to work my yearlings, even those bred to be sprinters.

Just my two cents' worth,

Laura

I thought that there was a thread around about the higher injury rate working earlier. I don't understand why the need is there to work RIGHT NOW! there is a lot to do.

People have been talking a lot about the injuries that occur by working early a lot lately, at least in the chat. I don't do any works before week 4.
