SIMMY Awards

Post by The Steward »

The SIMMY Awards are the SIM's version of the Eclipse Awards, etc. They are compiled and voted upon during the break and/or Week 1 of the next year. Mixer SIMMYs are separated from Thoroughbred SIMMYs in two separate ballots.

How To Get Nominated
Horses
At the end of each year, the game runs a report on the top point earnings in each section of the world. There are SIMMY categories for each of the Mixed Breeds (Appaloosa, Arabian, Paint, Quarter Horse, and Standardbred Trotters and Pacers), as well as Thoroughbred categories for Asia, Africa, Europe, Islands, North America, South America, and South Pacific, as well as All Weather and Steeplechase awards. Canada is counted for the North American award, Mexico is mixed in with the Islands, and the Middle East is mixed in with Asia.

Because of this division, it is imperative that you are the top point earners/race winners in each of these sections. A horse who wins 5 Grade 1 races, but they are in a different country each time, is going to be passed over for a SIMMY by a horse who won 3 Grade 2's in a country.

Once the list of 15 top point earners is generated, 3-5 horses are picked per category. Grade 1 wins are preferred, then Grade 2 wins. Two Grade 2's is equal to one Grade 1, and two Grade 3's is equal to one Grade 2. In the instance of a tie between two horses, won who won a single Grade 1 and one who won two Grade 2's, the Grade 1 winner is taken. High point earners who never won a race but ran second every time are ignored - horses must have won a race to be considered.

If one or two horses were completely dominant in a division, more rivals will not be placed on the ballot even though 3 or 4 choices are typically given. If one or two horses were dominant, and another 4 or 5 horses were about equal, they will also be left off the ballot.

People
There are six people categories, Trainer of the Year (Thoroughbred flat), Steeplechase Trainer, Mixed Breed Trainer, Harness Trainer, New Player, and Breeder. The nominations are selected by the top two in each category (with 100 starts minimum, 50 for new player category): the 2 people with the most wins, the 2 people with the most stakes wins, the one person with the most Grade 1 wins, the highest percentage of wins and then highest percentage on the board, and highest average earnings per start. In some years, there is a "compelling" person (for instance, if someone wins the Triple Crown, they are going on the ballot).

How to Win a SIMMY
Once a horse or person is on the ballot, the computer either picks the obvious winner (most grade 1's, most points, most grade 2's, etc), or if it's too close to call, it's up to the rest of the SIM community to vote them to a win. Because people get to vote, the "right" horse or person doesn't always win. It is easier to win when the horse is well-known on the forums and/or in the chat room, or if the horse has a headshot, just because voting takes a long time and people are more apt to vote for a horse they've heard of.

Horse of the Year
After all the other votes are in, the Steward will also post the voting for Horses of the Year. This is one horse per category, for instance, Paint Horse of the Year, Asian Horse of the Year, etc. The former criteria for this was the horses who won each individual division of that breed, but now it's a more logical "the best overall horse of the group."

What Do You Get If You Win?
SIMMYs are completely useless. You get nothing other than a note on your horse or owner page that doesn't go away. You don't get a trophy or anything.

Award of Merit
The SIMMY Award of Merit is chosen by the Steward every year and is announced in the chat room during the Steward's Cup Event, Week 16. It is tongue-in-cheekly thought of as the "Highest Honor" you can possibly win, mostly because it means that you've helped the Steward during the year, and after she publicly acknowledges that you are amazing, you are likely to end up with a lot more work.

Note: Starting in Year 31, the "Middle East" circuit including Dubai is now part of the Asian SIMMYs.
